Looking at a 5.5 alloy runabout (see Stessl Bluewater 5.5 thread) it has a 90hp Johno on the back. It's two stroke and has a carburettor (no fuel injection) but I hear they are very economical and reliable. Does anyone have a view on this motor. Only done 24hr.

hey tlp

ive had 2 of those 90 johnos, the first was a 96 model and was great.the second was a 01 model and was a piece of crap, both exactly the same motors,so its pot luck i guess as to reliability.the second one ran ruff as guts and lunched a gearbox and an ignition system in the first 12 months.
having said that they are a setup thats been around for a long time and are generally pretty good.
the ficht is the fuel injected version {which im pretty sure is made buy suzuki }so if yours has carbys its not one of them.
as for the oil injection setup, the only problem ive heard of was some had blocked vents in the top of the filler caps and this created a big vacuum in the reseviour bottles ,but you should'nt have to worry about that.just check that the vent in the cap is working.i personnally would'nt be in a hurry to disconect the oil system .

cheers scott

disconnect the oil injection pump and mix your own! i've got a 21 foot stamas with 2-140 hp. 1996 evinrudes. blew a powerhead on one because the oil injection pump went bad. had the power hear replaced, new oil pump installed . i ran that motor off a seperate fuel tank the first time i had her back in the water. mixed it 50-1 . the new oil pump went bad on the way out but instead of running lean on oil it pumped the heck out of it. pumped almost a gallon in the 1st 20 miles. i discovered the problem unpluged the pump. and when we got back to the hill i did the same to the other motor. been mixing my own since. no problems. btw---- the carburated models are NOT fich motors.

I have heard the the OMC motors (ie Johnson and Evinrude) used a different oil injection system to all other makes. Mechanics have also told me that due to the unreliability of their system it is a good idea to disconnect it and run premix.
I don't think the 90 would be that great on fuel economy, being a V4. A lot of 90 2 stokes are 3 cylinders and with features like loop charging and computer managment are very easy on fuel.

I have a 115v4 2000 model which is same motor diff fuel management etc and it starts 1st go every time and is ok on fuel if I keep it around 4200 rpm.
At 4200-4500rpm we can have a normal conversation which shocks a few mates with older 2 strokes
