having trouble setting up the transducer on the boat as it keeps spraying water up onto the motor what are your thoughts about what could be causing this

Could be too low in the water mate. Have the same problem with mine at times and it really has to be "fine tuned" depending on how many folk I'm carrying. There are hoods that you can buy to fit above the transducer that'll re-direct the spray downwards or you can look at one and make it yourself if you want to save a few bucks.

Agree - transducer too low. Have just fitted a new one myself and it is a trade off between spray from too low and poor readings from air bubbles if too high
I ended up having to put up with some spray to get the thing to work at speed offshore.
