I start my engine once a month every month when I'm not fishing. I believe that just like lawnmowers, letting them sit for ages does more harm than good. I'm not a mechanic, but I've had a lot of outboards over the years and without any major probs. One thing I do, which might horrify some fisho's, is that I run my outboard (40hp) in a drum, to which I add about 1/2 capful of turtle wax car wash. My impellers last for years and everything seems to be good and clean and ever so slightly lubricated.
Hope this helps Sax.
