Markham 4.9m Anyone own one?

Just like the look and price of these boats. Also the safety features really appeal to me. Twin motors, foam filled hull, self draining deck, twin fuel systems. Can be towed by a commodore\falcon legally and safely (single axle trailer) can be powered with as little as twin 50's. No other cat on the market I have found has similar features and setup cost. Can anyone think of one. Let me know.

No, I don't own one but I did my homework on it and agree with all your comments.

Would be an awesome rig with twin EFI 60 4 banger Yammies. Would only use 12 - 14 litres an hour on an economical cruise speed. Hmm, Bribie to Cape Moreton and back for under 40 litres ;D ;D

Would be a great boat for inshore and offshore. I don't own one either but from reading up on them, i would say it would nearly be on par with a 5.2 kevlacat, that i have been on. They are a great boat. Not sure if they lean into turns like the larger dominators do, but if they do i don't think you could go wrong with a boat of that size.

I don't think 50hp motors will really cut the mustard on a rig like this once you put some buddies, a rocket launcher, six rods, a cutting board, clears, fuel and all the other gear a boat is usually loaded up with. You will certainly be struggling to plane on one motor if it comes down to that.

I used to own one of the older 4.9 markham whalers (1980's vintage) for about ten years so can offer you some comments.

Agree with Krill about mist, certain angles and you got wet - they may have tried to address this with newer models.

Also don't expect it to level the water with it as hull length will limit you to a about 2 - 3 foot chop at speed ( ;D ;D sorry Troy couldn't help myself) before you get into a situation where you lose the effect of the cushioning from the tunnel and either slow down or prepare for more air time.

I found mine actually rode better with a small amount of chop compared to glassed out conditions as it was trim sensitive to propoising when it was glasssed out. You will find that they like to run away with you once you're up on the plane (i.e. gradually increase speed) so you need to come back off on the throttle if its a little rough.

I also felt the older version's scuppers didn't offer enough freeboard above the waterline at rest, but they may have changed that with the new boats.

I've tried to give you the negatives of my boat (older model of course) but don't get me wrong they are a very stable, safe boat for inshore and limited offshore work - and converted me to a lover of multihulls. They are an awesome little boat that doesn't feel like a 16 footer out on the water. Mine ran best at around 21 knots at all angles but head on, depending on the size of the chop/swell of course. In terms of seaworthiness, I once got caught out in 40 knot + winds 18 miles offshore in mine and got home OK (sphincter at little worn out from constant tightening of course) but obviously would'nt recommend this.

I had twin 50 two strokes on mine, top speed of around 35 knots with three guys on board. I also found it not overly load sensitive, I once had six adults in the boat (ferrying some stranded people back to the boat ramp - but that's another story) and could still get over 30knots (just). Mine used to plane at around 12 knots.

Think about the application you're going to use it for, if you're planning for it to be purely a fishing machine than you will be very happy with its stability and fishing space, but I wouldn't call it a family type boat given the issues with mist etc. - that's why I got rid of mine.

I would say that it would not ride as well as the 5.2 Kevlacat as the hull length will make a big difference in my opinion. If I had my choice again I would be looking for something like the 5.8 Kevlacat but ah the dollars, the dollars [smiley=bigcry.gif] [smiley=bigcry.gif] [smiley=bigcry.gif]

Go for a ride in one, and compare it to other 16 foot boats, that may just sell you on it, that's what happened to me.

Thanks for the comments guys. Was recently out at burnett heads and was watching a early 80's whaler 4.9 coming back. Conditions were slicked out but the boat was porposing really badly. Having said that the new 4.9 is vastly different from the old one. different cabin and hull dimensions and appears to have a larger chine (not sure if you could call it that) to deflect spray. Have also looked at larger cats but for an extra 500mm you can expect to pay another 35,000 dollars. Which really could be spent on gear, fuel and rigging the boat for light game. I intend to use it in moreton bay and offshore bundaberg. And I think any boat (trailerable) would probably need to slow down in a 2-3 foot chop ;D ;D ;D. unless of course it was driven by someone without a spine. Have read that the internal work dimensions of this boat are similar to that of a 6metre monohull.

agree that with twin 60 efi yammies it would be one slick rig. I was also considering twin 60hp etec evinrudes. As they would be lighter in weight and be as economical but also delivering that low down punch only two strokes can deliver. Just as quiet and just as efficient.

The kevlacat 5.2 has been re-released and is retailing from 72,000 - At that price I could get a fully optioned noosa cat or dominator.

The appeal to me is the compact nature of the rig. How many other 16 foot boats have similar features and offer the softness of ride and stability.

Was trolling along looking for bits of info on 4.9 Markhams...Yep it's an old post but I noticed a few little quieries about the little beasties.

I own a 1989 4.9 fitted up with a pair of 2007 75 mercs.(pr motors were early 80's 60 jonno's)
Proffesionally fitted up I went nearly 18mths with the attitude that the fit-up was correct and that the porposing and rear end drop was all part of the 4.9's attitude.

Crap trim, wet ride, submerging exhausts, porposing and on and on it went>:(

Countless watching others at play while I lost all respect for my boat.:bigcry:

A good freind of mine was also looking around and was re-making his Whittley from 'stern drive'130hp to 'pod mounted' etech 150hp.
Well this got us thinking as the old formular of...'cav plate level' was descussed. Etechs are special and require mounting much higher than the also rans.
So whats the plan???
Lets lift mine to the point where the cav is skimming just under the surface al-arrr 'etech'.
4 hole lift and around 60mm was a first try winner with the motors riding higher, exhaust breathers way out and trim angles more acute.

Ok now for another addition and on went a set of 'Permatrims'.
Now it must be stated that the weight maths were not looked at with the original 60's being around 25kg each lighter. MMMMM should of checked this too.

Test run was on a crap day with 1 meter plus Western Port Sou-easter.
Inntial run was with the wind and hole shot was brilliant and the little bugger just wanted to run. Even in a following wind WOT at 5500 rpm gave speeds of 75kph and dead straight with no porposing or cavitation.
Yep this is a hang on ride but no gut churning porposing is a bonus.
On the return into the wind with simular revs ans speed I was waiting for the "luanch" off the wave crests and the showering of water as the front clears were open....Didn't happen....What's this cats are wet into the wind garbage??
All went well and again it banged along at WOT in 'head on' waves.

Now I've sorted this unit out!!! Can't say it's that way for all 4.9ers but we got it first crack concidering I put probly and extra 45hp out back compared to the lazy jonnos..Still waiting on a slightly rippl day to realy give a spanking.. Smooth water is not a top end as well it might seem strange to some but 4.9ers go quicker when the surface if broken, then again it used to porpose at its worst when seas were glass. Strange but true.

Well I haven't been around in a while with a bit of moving and such but have been doing a bit....well getting a bit...a lot of work done on firecat.

Where to start.!!

My 4.9 has been through the wars....Leaking scuppers ("Oh gee" was mentioned in past postings here) have made for a re-build.

"Yeah yeah" transom rot,soggy foam...all the Whaler 4.9 hidden little pains.

The old girl had a partial top side re-vamp that although got a few good views looked a tad 'Gerry built', well Steve built anyway....like crap actually.Functional but crap all the same.

On a cold Octobers day in 2010......The ultimate fear of all small boat owners was unfolding.
Firecat was sinking.
Yes the floor was literally filling up and the arse end was getting rather low.
To cut short....The scupper seals(which where supposedly sealed closed) had let go and both sponsons had filled to capacity and the floor was following suit.

We got it home from 45 k's from the ramp at Carrum Vic. Took it home and found that the transom had also let go.

Got a quote and dismissed that for a complete overhaul and re-build.

Complete re-build....What am I saying here..??

My boat has had a few mods and such that as I stated before were practical but not that pretty. I lifted the screens for that 'wave breaker look' but that was very practical but very ugly.
With bi-mi and clears it did the job.
Raised front floor accommodated new seat bases and seats and raised the front view considerably.
A custom 'bow spit' was added before this and made my 4.9 a legal 5.2...still a shorty as far as cats go but it does look real smick. A drum winch fits in nicely now.

Ok what am I doing for and were is it at at time of writing..??


The boat was completely gutted out to bare hull..not a screw or fitting was left.
A trip to AA Morse Fibre Glassing in Hastings Vic saw a plan evolve.

New re-worked transom with waste full 'live bait tank' removed.
"No" engine well.
New floor..
New 100ltr twin breather fuel tanks.
Saturated Foam removed....will not be replaced.
Kill tanks in each sponson.
Total forward deck area reconfigure with 'Full Hard top Wheel House cabin' and partial 'cuddy cab'.
And the piste resistance....700mm hull extension..."not podding" 700mm right in the middle

This has already been added and my little 4.9 is now a 'ballsy 5.8.

Radical steps for sure but worth it....You see 4 9er owners are slightly twisted.

Yes the 75's are going back on...They are 2007 XL's with 40hrs from new.

Have been 'dicking around' for three Snapper seasons now with alter this and alter that that she has seen very little water time.

Examples being 2008 Making my own snapper racks/bait boards (many configurations:-X) dodgy trailer skids and New Bimi fit up.
2009 Snapper racks (again),raised cab floor, esky lockers and new seats and bases.
2010 Dodgy wave breaker,raised wind screen . 'Anchor winch', launch retriever, Mk11 Bimi alterations and of course that sinking feeling with the transom.

Actually wish but not really that the 'soggy foam and stuffed transom' were discovered years ago then I may have made this radical re birth happen around 2007 when the new motors were fitted.

Sure would of gave me a bit of 'fishing time';D

Hi all, i owned one of these little cats,it was a 4.9mtr as well,it was called Ambush!!.very similer to the boat in the photos,light brown/beige in colour,i had this boat for about 2years back in early 1990.in the day the only rival was the Swiftcraft Dominator.had one of them as well!
what i can tell you was my boat wasnt built all that well as i had broke or put a crack in the tunnel,right along side the two supports near the trailer winch D bolt. i had it repaired a sold it.in the day it was a ok boat but wouldnt own another one as they built to light.my boat was powered with 2 60hp two cylinder johnos.it had enough power to brake it.anyway thats my 2 bobs worth.:o

Perspectives need a little condensing here.
Gavcat is/was an earlier model than mine (firecat is 1989 or so) which with it's 'banana' shaped keel line left me with out a 'podding option'
To 'pod' along the rising aft keel line was on good advice a logistical nightmare.
Hence the '700mm' smack in the 'guts'.
Weight reduction with removal of rear bulkhead/bait tank/wet foam will give more buoyancy rearward and stabilise water line attitude.
Wheel House Cabin will balance out nicely (hope) and should come in at around the same or a few kg's heavier than the screens and crap I had up front(core-cell will be the larger % of the Cab build)

Fuel tanks are complete and with the boys.

A little miss-measurement on my part has the support plates a little too high but alls good as the floor will be raised a little higher to compensate.
Better that way as cockpit floor level will be way above water line attitude.
And my kill tanks will be deeper..LOL

Gunnels are in place and indeed the boat is now a measured 'sprit to stern' 5.8 metre.
Pretty happy for sure. A further surprise was that the boy's have sourced a 'brand new' hard top that will be modified and tidied up via a 'cut and shut' for Firecat.

Plenty of work going on with the strengtheners duplicated and in place along the sponsons.

Tape removed from underside and will have the floor and transom started and semi-completed by week (3) of March.

Hull will then be up-turned for underside finishing.

These shots show the initial repair of a 300mm horizontal crack that contrary to what Criby1 and myself thought may have been slowly weeping for a few years until the foam skin finally degraded and let the H2O pour in.

Kill Tanks will be sub floored and 1200mm long with rear transom floor running forward around 2/3 the 'KT' length with drop in hatches.
Sub floor 2000gph BP's will sit in each rear corner and through transom drain bungs will end drain the tanks....Through hul transducers will be located under 'KT' sub floors.

Well as I said on Sept 2nd it's up on stands."
As she sits on the stands the boat is 2.8 metres high.
2.3 metres boat height will suit me on the water and depending on water line height it's probably going to be around 2.2 with launchers fitted, maybe a little lower.
Trailed height given 'spring drop' and all roof fittings in place should see again roughly 2.8 metres or less.

Wave breaker glassing has started as has side panels and curves at gunnel side was juncture.
Front windscreens will be recessed into panels and now a little smaller at 500mm H x 450mm W for Port and Starboard. Centre at 500mm H x 400mm W.

It's been a while since I put up a few shots of Firecat so I will chuck up a couple of posts after each other 'It's out of the shop and getting fitted up now".

Top coat will be 2 pack as I have mentioned before with flow coating being applied from the bottom rib and underneath sponsons giving a hard surface for both trailer wear a tear and when I leave or have it moored on the sand at Shallow inlet or where ever. (any scratches and I hope there's none will always show white)

Across the gunnels from front to back have matched up very very well and it would be hard pressed once it's painted out to see the extension.."There isn't an extension now at all....It's a dinkum 5.8 Whaler now".

Dash is all filled and once I get all the gear into it will close up a little.
Sounder console will go on shortly and all dash construction will be complete....some removal of surfaces will start at home as you do for fit up of switches, gauges, helm, controls and so on.

Not without a few little problems on Friday though.
Cribies previous pictures do show the boats arse in the water but when the control box was assembled cab end a mix up was detected and I will only say that it's a fishing boat not a doughnut maker.
A missed ignition wire as well and it's back to the shop for a rather stressed out re-jig.....'never left the trailer'.

Well today conditions were atrocious...."all the stay at home stuff...high wind, breaking waves, cock eyed tide and "no witnesses in the car park to see these 'nut bags' taking a born again cat for a stroll".

Well a stroll it was !!
Sneak out of Welshpool ramp and wowww what a mess.
The Lewis was pushing hard with sideways slop so after a little spurt to check 'outta the hole shot' and 'WOT revs' it was 'get it on'.

"No playing with it....'it barked and away we went. WOT to the 'goal posts' at a very brisk 65 kph with water rolling in all directions and as I mentioned sideways push".

Running back with a 'following sea' at all speeds from WOT to around 2000 rpm was as uneventful as before.."No pitch or rock and roll".

Negatives....yes a couple.
Because of the open hatch cut out for the anchor winch water did enter a bit.."no it gushed in at very low speed but this is a fixable vice.
I had my idea as to what the fix will be to which Criby agreed and a phone call to another 4.9 owner confirmed.

The other is the 'spray' the 'spray' the 'spray'

Wow, massive, massive job - very well done!

She aint pretty, with that high cab, but super functional! and sounds like she rides great. I love the amount of deck space you have, and the dash/cockpit layout, the finish looks top class.

I wondered how you were going to get on with the square looking hard top setup with regard misting. Maybe you need a couple of little hatches to get some air flow on the lee side and stop it being a low pressure region. That is why they mist. I've found 5.2m KCs particularly bad just with vinyl clear/bimini setups. Bet you are relieved it is on the water now.

just found this post, youve done a great job. So there is a second person who is, well, challenged enough to take on a project like that. I would opf thought that the large cabin would of made it a little top heavy. I got rid of the misting problem by putting in a large bow breaker in (if thats what they are called). I started out with the 4.3, made it into a 4.9 plus pods, and a couple of 50's, then after several versions come up with well, a cat that was fattened, lengthened, deepened, higher and powered with 100's. Lots of work lots of fun.

Have you got a thread running on the re-build as I'm sure as mine got a huge following on 'bitchnet' from both the 'mono' and 'cat' fraternity yours would be popular too..
Interestingly was the positive outweighed the negatives comment wise.
'Bow breaker'??? Wave piecer is the term "I think"looks great and I can see that the splitting of the water plane running down the tunnel would create a siphoning effect along the tunnel roof that would actually 'suck' spray through and out the back at increased pressure allowing the boat to be 'in it's own little high pressure atmosphere' and keep the mist out.

Now that 'radome' has me looking with interest as I have just purchased a Koden for Firecat.
"In for a pound with what I'm fitting as it'll be probably the last boat I have".

The 100's sure give me a 'twitch' and inspires me for next season to ramp up my 75's to 90's via 'carby' upgrades.
You never know I may go '4 stroke' as the transom is rated very high and the water line attitude at rest seems able to float the extra 90 or so kilo's. "Maybe one day".
