I've just got a 5.3 half cab and it's got seat belt type of winch. Would I better of with a wire cable?
Thanks Ken ;D ;D

Ken

Personally, I would recommend the dyneema type rope. Once you change you'll never use anything else. It beats the strap type winch hands down.
My opinion

When I think of it, I would love to have a Boat Wench.

You know, like the ones at the cricket that go get your beers.

Ahhhhhh, the thought of it.

I've got Dyneema on my winch for a 6m glass boat. Best thing out there atm. I would leave the strap on until it dies & then swap to Dyneema.

I think they mean "winch rope" from places like Bias. I put it on my trailer and it is brilliant. Looks like normal blue rope. Less than $40 for your boat.

Dyneema sounds like a good product. I will definately be having a look at it next time I go to a boat shop.

I have heard some horror stories about winches snapping and badly injuring or killing people. Is this something that happens commonly?

All the best,

saphire

I always put a towel over the rope or wire to stop whiplash. It comes down to poor service i think. My dad worked in OH'S and this was a very common problem with towe rope with 4WD's

Safty first!!!!!!!!! Think smart think Safe

The great thing about Dyneema is that it holds no water, is pound for pound stronger than wire rope and holds no recoiled energy. That means if it snaps, it simply falls to the ground, unlike wire rope which could rip your head off!

Got it on my electric winch, no more rusty wire rope, no more cut hands from stray strands. I needed 12m of rope for my boat as I use a double line pulley, bought it from Glasscraft Marine in the valley. cost about $40.00 for 12m, put the old hook on from the wire rope, problem solved. The rope I got is rated to 6 ton as well.

The spools commonly use 2 ways of attachment. A lug on the side of the spool that the rope goes through & then is tightened up or a hole in the spool spindle. Mine has a hole in the spool spindle, so I put the rope through that & then spliced it. Done!
