Took delivery of our boat this weekend and are pretty rapt in it. Thought I would share some pics of it with you all. It is a sailfish cat with twin 90 hondas. It will be used to fish out of turkey beach. Previously had a 5.5 sailfish which was a great boat, but wanted to upgrade to a newer and bigger rig. Did a trip on Saturday to the banks in it and got very good economy. So far so good. Tony.

Garry, she is 2 years old with 220 hours on the clock. Been sheded all its life and is in as new of condition as I have seen for a 2nd hand boat. Was lucky enough to be first to see the boat pop up on boatpoint and bought it sight unseen and trucked it up from sydney. Happy with the honda's so far. Any maintanence tips on keeping them spot on. Didn't get the books with the motors but the old owner is trying to find them and send them up. What intervals should the oil be changed? Have they got adjustable tappetts? Tony.

Tony,

Oil changes and filter at 100hr intervals including engine and gear oils.

Tappets at 300-400 hrs .009" inlet .012" exh ;) also fuel filters and thermostats at this time

water pumps and plugs at 200hrs

Cheers

Garry

nice looking rig.

My only point of concern would be performance in a head on sea. Cats are never the best but that tunnel design looks like it will punch harder than Mike Tyson.

Let us know how it goes after a decent punch.

Great boat, good stuff. How does she go winching up onto the trailer, the winch looks like it could be lifted up a little bit from where it is.
Fishing out of Turkey, may see you out some time.

Corry,
I did the winching on its first run. Was very easy except the last few turns. Maybe the skipper will learn to put it all the way up next time.

Hi Yo,

"Mate has it got enough rod holders?"

You've got to be joking! #Do you fish? #My 15'er used to have 22. #Shawn Ryan (Witchdoctor) is fitting out a long boat and is has 30-40 already. #You can never have enough!

Dazz,

She will be fine. #I went out in his 5.5 for a weekend and let me tell you it gave nothing away to a 5.2 Kevlacat, a benchmark boat for a cat. #This thing can only be better being a metre longer and a bit heavier. #They might look blunt in the nose but when running if they are trimmed out a bit it is the bottom of the hull under the chines doing all the cutting.

Perko,

Superb rig mate, now you are truely fishing in style. She will stand out in the crowd up at Turkey !!
Excellent fuel economy too (mind boggling actually) :o :o, dare I say, better than than 5.5 could offer with it's 2 stroke set-up ???

Now the big question ??? How quick did someone snap up your old rig ???

Cheers

How well do the 90 4S's perform on a 6.5m cat? If you had the initial option would you go for 90's from scratch or not?

Craige, you will have to join us for a trip next time you are up at Turkey. Sold my old boat to a mate that had done some fishing out of it on the same day that I bought the new one. Wasn't planned that way but it worked out good for us both. Was a strange week actually. Wasn't even seriously thinking about upgrading but couldn't resist when it popped up on the market. Bought it sight unseen and had it at dads place at Kawana within 3 days of seeing it on boatpoint.
Mantaray, 90's are fine on this boat. Not sure if they would be enough if it was grp and heavier. Tony.

That's interesting as I was only reading an article the other day an the comparison between the 6.5 alloy sailfish and 6m GRP hook'em, which was really quite strange. The hull weight of the 6.5 sailfish was quoted at 1000kg with weight on trailer of only 1700kg yet the 6m hook'em has a hull weight of 840kg but a weight on trailer of 2600kg.

Interesting to know where the extra 900k's come from for the boat with the lighter hull weight.

But apart form that what would be your cruise and max speeds be from the twin 90's?

perko

Mantaray, top speed is about 36 knots with a cruise speed of 23 knots at around 4500rpm.

Perko,

The saying, "He who hesitates.........., those words are so true with boat purchasing as well, especially "Sailfish" Cats.
Hmm, a 5.5 would have looked good in my front yard ;D ;D.

A trip out with you guys to the reef would be excellent, I'll will arrange a Turkey trip for Christmas or Easter or some other long weekend so we can tee it up 8).

Are you fishing Smithy's comp in November ??

Cheers

Mantaray, top speed is about 36 knots with a cruise speed of 23 knots at around 4500rpm.

23 knots sound reasonable, this test report would have you believe a cruise speed of 35 knots but then over stating things is probably typical for boat tests.

I live in ballina near where these great boats are built. It looks like new! congradulations on a great buy :D :D.

A bloke i know is a pro and has one its 7.5 you should see it. It is massive and handles any conditions. When there is a big run-out on the bar those cats handle superbly. Great choise hope you have many good trips ;) ;)

handles any conditions I don't believe that for one moment and unless you have been out in ALL conditions then neither should you! Any conditions? no way!
