Varnish for my oars

As part of the boat clean up I would like to sand these oars down and give them a new coat of varnish.

Only thing is I went to Bias Boating today and their varnish is like $15 for only 250ml.

What I want to know is what sort of varnish do I need to use that has good resistance to sun damage and where is the cheapest sorts of places to buy it

just sand them back with an orbital sander and apply and out door polyurathane.
or just oil them with decking oil.
