View Full Version : Foils? Do they help?

Hi guys,I have a 3.8 tinny that has a merc super 15 on it.It gets on the plane quite quickly but seems to be a little unstable at just off the plane. So what I was wondering is if a hydrofoil on the outboard will help the stability of the boat.I have played with the trim adjustments and this doesnt seem to help as I either get too much or too little trim.Any feedback would be a great help from anyone who might have experienced the same thing. 8-)

Hi Mikos,
I have a 3.4m with a 9.9. The Lazilas foil was the best $20 I ever spent. At that cost, if you're willing to drill four holes in the Merc, I'd recommend giving it a try.
I've got a slower top speed, but better planing and a smoother ride. Helps keep the nose down too, when all the weight is at the back.
Good luck,
Mike

Hi 2iar,
Thanks for you feeback mate. ;)
Is the stability very noticable? The only thing i dont like the idea of is having to drill hole in my outboard :-/.
Is there a great difference in the handling.

Hi Mickos the foil shouldn't help with stability, they are designed to be out of the water once on the plane because they are fitted to the top side of the cav plate so if only just set up properly they may spray some water but that is about it. What do you mean by unstable? wouldn't think the 15 would get your tinny to chine walk :) ;D

They do help with the slow speed control, like heading for a jetty. The response time is reduced a bit (More direct steering) Go for the Lazilas one as it has the side wings.
Hi Mikos,
Here the thread that help me with the same dilema.

Thanks for the feedback guys,

That thread was very informative and going by what you are saying about the front of the boat going up and down alot in rougher water is just about right in what it is doing.I think I might go for a bag of cement in the front (maybe ballast of 30 kg).Im just wondering if any one has done this before. It should work well. ;)

Chine walk?remember its a super dooper 15 mate. ;D ;D

I dont really have trouble with the directions only after some black cans maybe ;D ::)I think it is the no weight issue up the front.I have a 4-5kg tackle box, anchor all of my safety gear and my esky as well but this only goes as far as the front seat.So what do you rekon?Go the ballast right the way up front?
Cheers

Hi Mikos,
A couple of things to consider...
What's a 30kg bag of cement worth, compared to a $20 foil - and what's it going to do for your fuel consumption? No point pushing around weight you don't need - you'd be better carrying extra fuel up there, or better still 3 or 4 cartons of the cold stuff :D
I'll give you a hand in jettisoning the ballast if need be :D
Seriously, I've got to be the least-handy handyman ever and even I could do it - it's too easy to fit.
Good luck,
Mike

I have 3.6 glass with 25hp/2stroke evinrude with a foil.
I would'nt be without it, it can be a bit twitchy at speed but its hard to get it on the plain without the foil. Would suggest you search for other posts regarding this issue as it has been raised a few times now and have seen some very good info posted.

Hey Sam,
Still in possession of "With Dignity" :D, but looking to upgrade really soon. She'll be up for sale if not traded in, so make us an offer :-)
Friday afternoon is a delicate situation - I've currently received tacit agreement on a boat purchase (we've a few to look at on Saturday morning) and wouldn't want to jeopardise that until negotiations are concluded.
After that, it's on for young and old :D - Has there ever been an Ausfish piss-up?
Thanks for asking mate, definitely next time. I've got a feeling you won't have to drink alone [smiley=wink.gif]

yeh , don't think it will help off a plane .......but it will assist you to get on a plane at a slower speed ...which i guess is kinda what you want ?

Hi Billo,
She seems to get on the plane quite easily and at a rather slow speed wich is fantastic. But shes light up the front and I just thought that a foil might have helped in some way to keep the front down more at a lower speed :-/.Sorry guys if that sound stupid but the theory of having a foil would sort of act as a trim tab style of thing. Thanks for your input everyone.Much appreciated. ;)
Cheers
