Went out today with a good mate to mud and then to peel .As we left from raby bay and i have to say the mozzies were on the chew at mud. Couldn't believe it anyway the wind died down so we went back down to peel and we had no luck there either.Got back to the boat ramp and noticed i had no power tilt which had been workin all afternoon ,had to do the manual thing anyways its a 1987 evinrude (70hp)any ideas guys what could be wrong

THANKS SHANE

Could be a loose connection had the same troublr with my Evinrude 1980 70hp. Check you are getting power then work towards the tilt button from the battery end.

Have you checked the hydraulic fluid level? I had a 40HP 1988 model. Unfortunately my PTT cr@pped itself, so it went to the wreckers....

Check fluid level... If there's no fluid in the resoviour, then it can't compress to push the motor up/down.... (My thoughts anyway - Could be wrong)

i will check the fluid as soon as i get a chance but there seems to be no leaks so why should the fluid level drop those the fluid dilute with age maybe?

I had a 115hp 1978 evinrude. It had a bleed screw and did require a bleed on the odd occasion. I think you need the motor up so it can drop as you bleed.

The other possibility was a directional valve inside that needed replacing.

Does it only do it when trying to go up?
If you get it to a midway point will it go either up or down or is just 1 direction affected?

Just 1 more thing.

If you have a control box hidden near the transom somewhere, there could be a loose wire or corrosion in there for relay power. Some terminals just give up the ghost after 25 years. (Just not made to last) Also check the wiring terminals for the limit switch.

some older outboards (like my old tower of power) had a manual release screw to let the outboard down if the pump pooped itself. Maybe it has come undone?? maybe not??
