Hey guys,

Not sure if this has been asked before but i have a question about electric motors.
I have a 3.7 Quintrex Traveller with just the basic layout and a 15hp Yamaha.
I fish in salt water only.

My question is,'Is there much difference between the fresh/salt electric motors besides the price?"
I spoke to my local Minn Kota dealer and he said that they sell freshwater ones all the time for saltwater use. He also mentioned that they sell them with a saltwater anode.
The last thing that he mentioned was that Minn Kota may not cover for warranty if there was any corrosion present.

How could Minn Kota tell if it had been used for saltwater if it was cleaned properly everyday?

"What size motor would suit my boat application?"

Help required!!!!!!

Cheers Aaron

I run a 55lb MinnKota Maxum bow mount on my 4.45M boat. I've had it for a few years now and had no problems at all. As far as warranty goes, you won't be covered if the internals of the motor have corrosion but it doesn't matter about the outside, this was told to me by someone from BLA. As far as size for your boat goes, I would probably go for a 44lb, not sure if you want a bow mount or foot control but the hand steer would suit and they can be easily mounted on the front with a home made bracket. Hope this is of some assistance.

The info you have is the same as I have had before - for Minn Kota.

The bigger motors don't do much for speed - but do help you work when the tide and wind is against you. # On a mates 4.5 a 55lb could not hold us against the tide and a bit of wind one day last year.

Even so a 44 should be OK.

We have a 3m #with a 65 - but thats for Electric only dams #and otherwise a crazy oversize

Clutter, Gary,

I've been steered towards a 28Lbs Minn Kota Classic, will this be ok in minimal creek movement say between 1m drop in tide at peak in a reasonable sized creek?

Clutter, 'Do u have any pics of handmade brackets for bow mount of transom motor?'

Lures4Me,

If you are only going to fish saltwater I would pay the extra cost and buy a Minnkota riptide. I had a Powerdrive bowmount for a few years and always washed it after using it in saltwater but corrosion still found its way to the internals of the motor. No matter what you do salt somehow will find a way in. Its more a "peace of mind' kind of purchase you know if something goes wrong you will be covered. A 40lb riptide transom mount will get your size boat through most situations.

Thanks for the info guys, i think i might steer towards the Riptide for warranty and peace of mind. It also seems that oversized is better.
