View Full Version : Sounder interference

Hi, I am researching my purchase of a good Sounder / GPS / Radio ... package.
The bits I am considering are:

Garmin GPSMAP 172 CI (internal GPS)
Navman 4380 Sounder

I am a bit concerned about some talk that the Navman 4380 causes all sorts of interference with electronics near by. My console is pretty small and I'd hate to have this problem.

Does anyone have any experience / problems with these products?

One of the reasons I like the Navman is because of the ability to see how much fuel I am using / have left etc. Although it has a small screen ...

Look forward to comments.

Geoff.

Geoff, I have a Garmin GPSMAP 178C with dual freq and Int Ant and it is fantastic. Have it mounted on a smallish side console with a six switch panel (full), 27MHZ and AM/FM Radio and do not have a problem with interference. I wouldn't think there would be a lot of difference between the 172CI and the 178CDI.

Thanks jimbamb ... I did a quick search for the 4380 but I didn't get any hits (I might have done it wrong). I have heard negative talk about Navman themselves, I was hoping to get feedback about the 4380.
I'm also considering the Garmin 250C Dual Freq ...

Well, just ordered the Garmin 172CI. Got it at a good price. Now to decide on a good sounder.

Be careful of the Raymarine - see earlier posts concering problems with shallow water operation.

Thanks blaze - gets deep out there quick eh!

Eerie? I know that feeling, especially when you go solo. All those giant squid cruising round under you.....visions of huge tentacles reaching up over the gunwale - hell, where's that axe!!

Blaze, mate how does the garmin go at shallow depths? What would you think would be a good price?
Cheers Hurlz

Hi hurlz
I Normally fish 10 to 80m and I find it does the job for me, mind you its the first color sounder I have had so I am really compairing to previous grey scale sounders. I paid $850 off ebay when they first come out, I think they are about the $900 in stores and about $750 on ebay now.
cheers

Do the higher powered sounders not perform as well in the shallows as the lesser powered versions? Will be in the 10 - 20m range. Sometimes much shellower up the rivers and creeks. Sometimes 100m out on the reef.

Does more power generally mean better?

I have the Navman 4350 colour sounder and have had no problems with it. Deep or shallow works fine for me even though some people have problems with them.

i have the 6600 track fish and it is great now

when i first got it the sounder was shit so i got on to navman and they gave me a new transducer and ever since then it is great lost of punch .
i was 30 m away from amates boat and he punched up his 600l ferrno to the max this didnt affect my sounder but when i returned the favor this screen backed out so no sortage of punch from the 6600 .
it seems that up till 6months ago navman had some probs. with there transducers but this has been fixed
