Anyone know if you can get away with using paint stripper to remove paint (spraycan) from gelcoat without damage, or am I in for a few hours with the sander.

Cheers :)

3vs.

you can use the paint stripper but it will etch the gelcoat ::)

This will require you to buff it to restore the finnish

Theres a fair chance that the gelcoat under the paint will be a different shade to the rest of the boat, so you will end up having to sand the area anyway. Use the stripper sparingly, because it really will etch the top layer of gelcoat. When sanding start with 320 and work your way up to 600 then buff

Been here, it will also soften the gelcoat by a factor of 10 and to the point where even a piece of wood used as a scraper will easily gouge the gellcoat - it scared me 8-) ;D

Cheers fnq

Don't do it. A boat detailer friend of mine told me the paint stripper will continue to eat the gelcoat and will destroy it.
