Hi Ribbit,
I've just done the whole exercise on our new plate Aluminium boat.
first we hit is with CT18 truck wash to remove any grease/sludgy stuff from the manufacturing process
Then we acid washed it 4 to 1 water to Alloy brite acid (you'll pick it up from the large auto accessory retailers) in a pressure bottle...make sure the acid doesnt dry and leave a white alluminium oxide on suface...the acid etches the surface giving the primer someing to key into...your surface may be open enough but I'd probably carfefully mask the areas then I'd give it a hit...let it react...you'll see what I mean, it kind of bubbles on the surface..then wash it off with water.
Once you've dried it off...Wipe it over with metho...not prep ...metho doesn;t leave a film...
then single pack etch it
nick it back with a quick rub of 320
Wipe it with prepsol not metho...meths will pull the etch primer off and at this point i'm told the light film will not affect the painst capacity to key in
You may need some 2 pac hi build primer if you've got scratches you want to remove and want a really smooth finish.
Nick that back with 400
Wipe it over with prepsol to remove any grease/sweat/dust again
Hit it with 2 pac...we used industrial stuff...your choice really...no need to buff
Good luck
Rhys

Hi Ribbit...
I just reread my last post...
I meant to say.."put the acid wash in a pressure bottle"...one of those jobbie you use to spray your tomatoes or cockies...get them from Bunnings for $8.00
Sorry if that was unclear
cheers

revs done well. the only thing i wouldnt do is use 2pack hibuild primer. if u need to cover any deep scratches use 2 pac epoxy primer. i did mine about 6 weeks ago and top coated it in automotive 2 pack. i know, cause i sell it all 4 a living. if u need anything give me a ring 0411643128

Gee Greg,
now you tell me you can supply...[smiley=wut.gif] [smiley=wut.gif] [smiley=wut.gif] ;) Never mind...we got a pretty good deal on the paint...in and out for under $900 plus five cartons of think amber..it seems like there was only one time zone..."beer-o-clock" ;D ;D ;D
And we came up with a pretty reasonable job too.
Cheers

Hi All,
Are you guys using 2 pac polyurathane paint?
If so what does it normally cost per Ltr?Planning to paint my 4mtr punt sides and inside.

Arron
I told my supplier that I wanted a 2 pac industrial paint that would be as tough as nails...that's all I know...I'll try to find a can and give you some more deatils...but I reckon a PM to Greg (Seahorse) might be the go...sounds like he knows his apples from his pears when it comes to paint, where for me...paint is paint...I just followed the instructions given by a couple of very experienced Spray Painter mates who did the job for me
Cheers

My brother has just done(more or less) what revs57 suggests, the boat came up like a brand new one,it's so good it fooled the neighbours as they thought it was a new boat.
