Help,,, help,,,

Checked my battery today in readiness for the weekend, and found that although the batteries are fully charged and the motor starts with no problems, the trim and tilt will not work.

When I hit the up/down button, I get a click sound, but nothing else. This seems to me to not be an electrical problem or a fuse, because if it was a fuse I would not get that clicking sound, it would just be dead.

But then,,,, I know squat about trim and tilts.

Before I call in a mobile mechanic, does anyone have any suggestions?

G'day cheech.
Definatly an electrical problem. I'd start by checking all connections for corrosion or if they've worked loose. Lets start by finding out what engine you have?

1988 merc redband 100hp.

Where to start though? I cannot lift the motor up to see where the leads connect. Is there a way I can relieve the preasure to lift it?

Cheech,

there is a good chance ya brushes have worn out in the trimm motor :o

See if ya can get something and tap the trim motor, a nice solid hit like ya want to keep it..not like ya want to kill it ;D

There should be a manual release some where...it will look like something that needs a big flat screw driver to fit in the slot.

Does ya engine still turn over?/

I don't know anything about mercury, but on an older OMC setup the click sound is the solenoid/relay in the control box which is mounted in the boat (follow the cable from the PTT).
If you're sure of battery charge and terminal connections, see if there is there any heat build up in the cable if you can get someone to hold the switch for a couple of seconds.
Means there's current getting to the motor.
If not, you'll need to check the connections in the control box. There should be a fuse in there, but generally on the low tension side before the relay. Check it anyway. A squirt of possum p**s and a tap with screwdriver handle won't hurt.

I had that problem once and it was a dirty fuseable link at the solenoids. It let enough current through to get the solenoids clicking but not enough to turn the pump over.
A clean and away she went.

Got it going again. Thanks all for the suggestions. That diagram was a big help to see what the setup was. After getting the motor up, I gave it a few love taps and it gave a hint of wanting to move. A few more taps and it started moving very slowly. Worked it up and down a half dozen times and Is as good as new.

When I loosened the screw to be able to raise it, I lost a fair bit of oil. What do I use to replace it? I heard a while ago to use power steering/auto trans oil. Is that right?
