Trailer Winches

Hello,

I need to purchase a trailer winch for my Cruisecraft 500 with a Merc 90 on back. Do the Powerwinches ($800) significantly outperform the cheaper winches ($250-300)? Is anyone using a generic brand winch for their boat AND are happy with its performance? Any thoughts appreciated.

Bob i would stick with the power winch you mentioned or the superwinch.
If these other winches you are talking about for 200.00 to 300.00 are the winches i am thinking of they will not do the job.

In short, yes!
The cheap winches are nothing but heaps of junk.

Powerwinch will serve you well.

I use a Powerwinch 712A on my Cruise Craft 600 Explorer.

mate head down to the local gym and get a good decky, just mention you can feed her fresh fish ;D if she winds up the boat for ya 8-)

those cheapies are just that... i am sure theres a lot of people who bought them and are now using them as anchors

The cheap ones are cheap because they are made in China. I saw one today for $140 at Supa Cheap Auto. I haven't had any problems with my cheap Chinese power tools. Has anyone actually used one of these winches or are they just assuming they are crap?

Another thing is what do people do for security with their winches? I wouldn't be keen on leaving a $800 winch at the ramp for someone to pinch.

I bought a cheapy from an aution (from super cheap) pulled it apart all looked good had broken 1 cog a tooth came off, if you got this remade out of good steel I would think they would last quite sometime (if it break at all) they all come with a warranty so for 140 cont hurt too much i suppose

Billfisher some of those winches at super cheap will not have the pulling capacity as the powerwinch.
Someone correct me if i am wording this wrong but those cheap winches might have the rolling capacity but not the pulling capacity that is winching upwards.
I have seen people buys these winches without studying what is written and in actual fact they are only suitable for a reasonable size tinnie.

Stripped the gears twice in 2 pulls on 2 winches. Also saw one that wouldn't pull a 5m quintrex up onto the trailer either.
They are crap.

I use to grunt and groan a bit hand winching my 18tf glass boat on. Then I gave driving it on a go. Once sussed out, it is really easy. Just need to kick it in and out of gear a bit to keep the speed really slow when lining up and making sure you tilt the motor enough so you don't ding the prop. Now I do it every time so no need for a power winch. Just a different perspective,,,
