View Full Version : What's your fuel economy?

A question for all

I am interested to know what the fuel economy, or the lack there of ;) would be of others.

I run a 22 foot CC fibreglass with 85 Yahamas AET's off the back. Unfortunately I have no idea as to how big the fuel tank is exactly, but I will suspect that it is in the 200 liter range. (Also have 2 x 20 liter tanks for that just in case scenario)

I have been trying to work out my fuel economy, or rather my average fuel consumption for an average day on the water.

A normal day would be to head out between 15 to 30 kilometers offshore. Spend time on the various reefs trolling around using either a single engine or sometimes both if there is a bit of a chop. On a normal run we will average just shy of 50 km/h with the rpm's running at 4000.
Trolling is done with one engine at about 1500 rpm, or both at 1250 rpm (Give or take depending on current, waves, wind etc.)

The boat normally has three guys on it with the various tackle and beer boxes.

Running around like this we average 1 kilometer a liter of petrol.

Is this average, or are we running heavy on the juice?

The reason for me asking is that we are planning a trip to a wreck that is 90 kilometers offshore. When planning a trip, I prefer having enough fuel plus 20% spare. As this are now, we would have to install a bigger tank or we would have to carry loose jerry cans which I am not to keen on.
I have been to the dealers, you can guess what their recommendation was.... :-X

Anybody who would like to share their consumption figures please?

Regards

Wessel

I too was interested in fuel economy and heres mine,

Standard trip 3 adults 1 child, 2 esky's, drinks, battery booster (heavy), 10L additional fuel, tools, camp chairs, towels etc etc.....

Signature 492F 90 L tank, with 2S 85 Suzuki.

The low figure was just with me doing some light fishing.

Last weekend we were at Berowra Waters and had two big day trips on Quintrex 480 Freedomsport with 2 stroke 70hp Yama

Saturday
70km return with two adults, sheltered waters. 40 litres fuel. 4800rpm
(1.75km per litre)
Sunday
50km return with 4 adults, sheltered waters, 31 litres fuel, 4800rpm - 5000rpm
(1.61km per litre)

Only way to be sure is to install fuel flow metering that once calibrated will give you exactly what you are using and have used. I know Navman have a very good product and have heard Lowrance make a unit too.

Mine comes with the mercury smart gauges and at any time I can see exactly how much fuel I have left and how much I am using per hour. But my last boat had the Navman unit and it was excallent too.

I think you can't have too much information about the fuel situation while on the water.

P.S. If it is 2 stroke. Oil quantity is just as important.

Does anyone have any feedback on the Lowrance one.

Stopped logging in the spreadsheet now but with 159 hrs will start counting again as the engine seems to be running stronger. 8-)

In the first 100 hrs my Zuke DF 140 was averaging 2.25 kilometres per litre. This was all offshore travelling approx 18 nm each way and trolling @ 2000 rpm for 8-10 hrs. Engine does not stop on trolling trips in summer when chasin speedies. :-* First few trips I combined kms/fuel used giving initial figures of -

Total travelled ----> 248 kms (GPS logged)
Fuel Used ----> 110 litres

Brings a smile to the dial everytime I fill it up (even at these stupid fuel prices).

Cheers

Here's my figures for a Haines Hunter 510 Breeze (5.1m) with a 90hp Johnson 4stroke. Normally carry only two adults but sometimes four, 120ltr under floor fuel tank, esky and the normal equipment. I normally cruise at around 4000-4500rpm depending on conditions.
384 nautical miles in 29.25hrs using 347ltrs,
equates to 11.9 litres per hour, or
1.1 nautical miles per litre (2 klm per ltr)

Personally, I was taught to estimate fuel usage allowing 33% for reserve.

Trust that helps.

I run a 150hp 4s Yamaha on a 6.5m plate alloy and get about 1.2km/l in rough heavy going and about 1.5km/l on a reasonable day. I generally sit on about 4000rpm for about 45km/h when the seas permit. It only has 75hours on it atm so will be interesting to see if it changes much as it fully wears in. These have been the figures pretty much from new.

I have a 6mt Cairns Custom Craft with 2 x 50hp Yamaha 4 strokes. Get around 1.10nm per litre in good weather and just under 1nm per litre when it chops up. Sitting on around 4100rpm, cruising at around 18knots SOG.

Thank you for the replies, apreciated

Morlers, conservative spare fuel margins is always a good thing. Note taken.

What still makes me wander is how the heck do you and guys like sportfish and leezor manage those distances (+/- 2 km a liter) Reading it again it would appear that the better fuel economy is with the guys running four strokes?

Fuel mangement systems are not available in this country, with petrol prices currently at about 25 Aus cents a liter :-X :-X :-X Nobody here see the need for wanting to manage fuel consumption. If I was to get a system it would have to wait until the next time I am back in Aus.

Looks like I am on averages OK running a 2 stroke.

Thank you

Sempre,

I have the Lowrance fuel flow meter. It is plugged into my X107cdf Sounder. Installed it on the weekend and gave it a test run. Seems to work fine (although I haven't calibrated it yet). Gives you all the things like litres / hour, litres / km, economy, fuel rate, fuel used etc etc.

If you have a sounder that can use it you need an additional expansion kit. Ordered it through bias for approx $230 (kit and probe).

G'day
On the rellies boat, a 500DF steber runabout matched to a 115 merc 2 banger, both 1973 vintage. We ran the navman furl kit on the weekedn, just calibrated it and at 4000rpm doing 24kts we were getting about 2km/litre. Burn was 22lph i think. Bit of a contrast but my 3.7 horizon with a 2banger 2000 model 9.9 merc on the back gets 3km/litre at WOT which is about 19kts, 2 up full of gear.

has anybody tried a magnetic fuel saver on a outboard.
Do they work? :-/

Just out of interest for everyone while it is fresh in my mind from the weekend.

34' Black Watch, twin 330hp Ivecco diesels, 260 litres for 190kms. That was with at least 92kms of running at 2200 rpm for about 22 knots.
