Hi

Can anyone say whether you need to fit breakaway brakes to old trailers. Is there are date before which they weren't requried. There seem to be a lot of older rigs with the cable or hydraulic brakes.

I was thinking of changing the motor which will put me over the 2 tonne mark, but I will need a complete new trailer, so it's not viable.

Whichway.

If it is over the two tonne you do need breakaway's irrespective of the age of the trailer. Had to research this for my father who purchased a second hand trailer. The regs are very clear.

if you trailer will carry the weight then all you have to do is fit hydraulic disks and a breakaway unit also you will need to fit an electric brake controller in vehicle the best breakaway unit i have fitted is hydrostar coupled to a hayman reese control you can do all this yourself
