Depends on what motor you have ;)
If its a Etec or Optimax, FICHT, or high tech type they all have oil recommended by the manufacturer that you really should stick too
Most other conventional 2 strokes use "TCW3" oil.
I have a 120hp Evinrude VRO 1986 and I used to use Valvoline (from Kmart) and it was very smokey and i heard other reports on here about it being smokey too. I switched to Quicksilver (by Mercury) and it was a lot better.
My mate was using Shell Nautlis in his ~1998 115hp OMC OceanPro and it was quite good and good value when you buy a 20L drum
Another boat ive run in had a 2003 Yammy 175hp 2 stroke Carby and it was using the factory recommended YamaLube oil and it was very good.
Everything is cheaper if you can buy it in 10-20L drums or split it with a mate.

Hey, I have heard good reports about Yamalube and Quicksilver Premium Plus, this is if your motor is a 2 stroke that requires tcw-III rated oil. There was a test in the USA not so long ago where all the different brands of oils were tested, but the results never released because the oil companies took out an injunction to stop the story from being released. The only comment made was "If you're using Yamalube, you haven't got much to worry about." Yamalube would need to be decent oil because their motors run 100:1. I am about to sample Yamalube, then Quicksilver Premium, and then Premium Plus from Quicksilver to see which I like best. Yamalube is the cheapest so if there is hardly any difference, I will use it, $30 for 4L. Hope this helps. Joey.

Have to agree with the savings in buying by the 20ltr drum $85-90.
This is what I was doing until I bought a new merc, conditions of the warranty state that Quicksilver oil must be used.
Unfortunately, the best deal I can find on it is around $90 for 9.75ltrs.

I HAVE TRIED MANY OILS IN MY MOTORS AND FOUND THAT TORCO IS BY FAR THE BEST I HAVE USED BUT IT IS VERY HARD TO GET VERRY LITTLE SMOKE OR FOULING EVEN AFTER HOURS OF IDELING

Onerabbit,
You must have made a typing mistake as i can buy the quicksilver for aroung $30- for 5lts.
Quicksilver in the merc lasts a lot longer than the other oils ive had to buy when caught short.

I got a 15hp Merc too (1999) and i use the normal Quicksilver oil. Ive found that it runs less smokey when the fuel/oil mix is fresh. After say 2-3 months it gets more smokey (even if i shake the fuel tank up to make sure it is all mixed) #I use ULP premium 95ron.
Just a observation. It is by no means a smokey engine, but i seem to notice a difference.
PS i never keep the pre-mix longer than 3-4 months max and im not starting a debate

Merc premium plus is great, BCF are one of the cheapest outlets, even beat springwood marine.
BCF is from memory $78 for 9.5lt for the premium plus and the normal quick silver was about $15 cheaper.
Also had great results from yamalube in a previous yamaha.

Hi nuffy,
bought yet another under 10 ltr bottle of Premium plus the other day, over $95, when I had my old yamaha90, all I ever used was BP riptide or penzoil, under $90 for 20ltrs, go to your local depot, I'm sure some will sneer & bag 'inferior' oils, but riptide had looked after me over quite a few drums.
As for the quicksilver , not that much difference , but the "good oil" does give her that extra snap, & is supposed to give better lubrication in extreme conditions, we go pretty hard, dunno, they all smell like crap.

Does anyone know if quicksilver ever do 20ltr drums, & where I can get them?
