We have just started beach launching of a 4m Bluefin Discovery pulled by a new model Rav 4 (higher clearance, 17" wheels, 4 wheel lock function). Any tips on what to do and what to avoid, we have seen a couple of people bogged everytime. Thx.

Down in Bundeena, the Royal National Park south of Sydney. The area is tidal. There is a strecth of about 25-30 metres of deep, soft sand to cross.

Probably the most important thing to remember is to first reverse your rig about half a metre on retrieval before trying to go forward this lifts the wheels of both car and trailer out of the sand ...the action of water around the wheels causes them to sink. #The car wheels can settle a little in wet sand at waters edge, and if a wave laps around the wheels your in trouble. By reversing first it pushes them out then up and out you go...and if you're doing a bit of beach launching I've found a swing away drawbar extention a brilliant innovation for beach launching the 6mt Rip Tide at Minnie Water...most leading brands of trailer have them as an option...Dunbier, Redco etc...not too expensive, but worth their weight in gold
A friend of mine has a couple of strips of mesh 30cm wide x1.5 metres long he puts down under his trailer wheels for good measure...I've not needed to do that yet, but if its really soft then you could consider that as an option too.

Thx Rhys, haven't heard of a swing away drawbar extention, but it might be worth looking into to give some greater distance between the trailer and the car. Have a nearly new "Sales" trailer, don't know if I will be able to get it fitted but will explore options.
Failing that, the mess mats sound like a good fall-back.
