View Full Version : Cruise Craft Outsider 575

Hi all, I will be placing an order for a 575 outsider in the very near future, and I'm asking for some feedback from other 575 Outsider owners on what motors you are using, and what sort of performance/economy are you getting.
I'm leaning towards, F150 yammy, 140 4st Johnson/Suzuki or if they ever arrive the elusive 150 E-Tec.
Boat will mainly be used for fishing (offshore and bay)/family.
Buying the boat is the easy part, it's the age old question" what motor do I need" thats causing a few headaches.

Thanks
Alan

Send Wyoming a PM, He has a 2 stroke Yamaha on his, and see what he thinks.

Cheers Ryan..

PS. He may be overseas at present, Im not sure but he told me he was going over for work when I spoke to him 2 weeks ago.

Alan,
Got a 135 Optimax on my 575 Outsider. (see Avatar)

Performs very well and am extremely Happy but just wonder if I should not have gone the 150

Economy is great too and motor now has 130 hours

What other options are you after?

Alan when i went for a test in the 575 with a 130 yammy i felt it was under powered.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I really appreciate it. I took one for a test drive that had a 140 jonno on the back and thought it was ok. Had 4 adults aboard only 1/2 fuel, I thought it should have been quicker to plane but, the motor was new and only had standard alloy prop. So I've made the 140 as the minimum benchmark. Speaking to several other people (including my dad) they all say go MAX HP. Basically all your comments have verified that as well.

Angla, is it motor options or boat options? if it's boat options, I'm basically checking every box. (I'm sure it's $1000 for every box you tick) It's my reward for spending the last 15 years in PNG. I'm actually flying back up today for another 2 weeks. (Gotta pay the bills somehow)

Cheers

Really is a Fantastic choice in boat and I love mine.

Looked at 1 with a version of canopy and then it arrived with a different version.
The draw back was sunlight coming down through the windscreen and affecting electronics, and the back canopy was bigger, and I thought that was good but holds water and has drooped and rubs my head (6'4") when fishing (I am not a whinger by nature)

There is more I can mention in PM or phone me

Hi Alan,

I have just purchased a 2002 model 575 :D and will be going out with marine engineer on Thursday morning to do some on water testing before the boat gets serviced. The boat has a Merc 150 EFI ( not an optimax). We are meeting at Horizon Shores in the morning. You would be quite welcome to come out for a run to see how the bigger engine goes.

Just received mine in november. And havent got a bad word to say about it. I decided on the Yamaha
150 V-Max. Test drove a 130 2-stroke yammie and the 140 four stroke Johnno , neither of which impressed me al that much. 130 was a touch to sluggish( the test day turned out to be very lumpy, which worked out fine) and the four stroke cruised fine but just didnt have that instant power that you need for bar crossing IMO. Fuel economy seems to work out around 20 to 25 lph in less than perfect conditions. I'm in the redlands and dont mind organising a test run if that helps.Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions maybe I can help you with. Great choice of boat and I dont think you'll be dissapointed.

Fourfingers seems like he felt the same way i did with the 130 yammy 2 stroke.
Just seemed to be struggling to get up on the plane and top end was not crash hot either.
If you are going 2 stroke my opinion would be 150 hp.

Troy and Tony my thoughts as well on the 140 johnno. OK at cruise but just not quite enough get up and go.

Tony, that would be great if we could organise a test. I need 10 posts to be able to PM though. It's a bit difficult to get a internet connection up here so I'll be a bit slow getting my 10 posts in.

Thanks for the offer Alex but unfortunately I'm still up here in PNG.

I think the 150F would be more than you will ever need on a 575 I own the 625 and went for the 150F Yammie. I don't have any problems and have had mine for 2 years. I love the economy I regulary do 120k out to Hutchies and around the bay. It costs me about $100 in fuel to do the 120 ks.
Top speed on the 625 with it on is around 65klm thats fast enough for me. I was going to buy the 575 but just couldn't help myself with the deal George at Wynnum Marine offered me for the bigger boat. You'll love the Cruise Craft.

how heavy is the outsider 575???

Alan_L
07-04-2006, 03:48 AM
It should weigh in just over 1900kg with a 150 e-tec, full tanks and all equipment on board.

GBC
07-04-2006, 07:59 AM
My 2c.

I'm thinking from the way you guys are talking that the 575 is a whole lot heavier than the 550? But that can't be so because they come from the same hull mould.
Mine had a 115 ocean runner on it and rarely did I think it needed more power. The boat was used for offshore fishing, regularly crossing coastal bars through NSW and QLD, fishing three blokes plus gear (+30 odd snapper before the bag limits changed!!!). If I was skiing or lairing around the bay maybe I'd think about going bigger, but offshore the Cruise craft hulls need to be driven at a more sedate speed than the same length hull from manufacturers of a similar pedigree. If you can drive a 575 quicker than 25kts offshore in any sort of sea state you're lucky/crazy. Just thought I'd add this post for those cutting the budget a bit fine - 135-150 h.p. on these hulls are nice, but not essential.

Going to hutchies the last trip out, was doing 30 knotts in my 575 outsider with 135 Optimax. Just taking it easy. If I remember it was pushing at about 4800 rpm.

I think it weighs about 1700kg dry weight, and I would say about 300 kgs of extras on board.

Can't wait to see how the new boat performs on the bay Alan. Sorry to hear of the delay in taking delivery. It will be worth the wait.

You'll be very happy with it. I've had my 575 Outsider with a 140 four stroke Johnson for three years now and it is a great boat and motor combination.

Running a 575 2003 model Explorer with a 115 hp Yammy. Purchased 2nd hand a prior to the water test I thought the 115 would be way under h.p'ed. I was quite surprised at the performance of the 115hp.......out of the hole performance is quite good with 2 or 3 on board....have had as many as 6 adults on board......obviously a bit sluggish with 6 on board. Do lots of trips to Moreton and the Banks, no problems. Top speed is 67km/hr or 36 knots. Cruises comfortably at 25 - 30 knots all day long, including offshore..........the hull loves the following sea. Addition of bennett trim tabs has helped hull perfomance dramatically & helps get hull on the palne quicker which can compensate for the 115 hp motor. If I could do it over again & $$ were not an issue, would probably go for the 150hp......always good to have some spare herbs, especially over bars. Neighbour has just purchased a 2006 575 with 150 e-tec......going for water test tomorrow. Will add another post after that as it will be a great comparison against the 115hp. Expect the 150 e-tec will be quite the rocket!!

Alan_L

Hi Baycruiser, I would really be interested in how it goes. It's hard to find any feedback on these new 150 e-tec's, as they are so new. All reports so far, are that are a smooth, quiet motor.

Would your neighbours boat have a blue hull, as I saw one being fitted out at the factory with a 150 e-tec.

Had a run in the neighbours new 575 Explorer fitted with the 150hp e-tec..........definitely the rocket I expected. Goes fantastic, out of the hole is instant. The e-tec has tonnes of grunt......won't have any trouble over bars with this thing, the throttle response is absolutely instant even after 4000rpm. Motor is nice and quiet & fumes are non-existent. Motor was purring away effortlessly on about 4000rpm for ~32 knots. Did not do a top speed test but I am sure it would be a good 42 knots. He is going out again today....will see if he can get some additional performance figures noted + some fuel consumption numbers from his fuel flow gauges. Also noticed that the foam filled hull rides quieter than mine (as expected)........really nice package.....recommended.

Were you able to get any fuel consumption figures...? Also, you mention the ETEC is quiet - in your opinion, is it as quiet as a 4stroke when at cruising speed?

Thanks

just wait till the hours tick up, i think its around 10-20 hours and it feels like it has twice as much grunt as the ecu sets it out of safe mode

Alan_L & Jack_attacks,

Went for a run to the banks last w/end in neighbour boat, figures as follow; 67 l's used (fuelled up at servo post trip) for 126km trip. My 575 with 115hp carb 2-stroke uses 93L's for the same trip. Suspect these figure will only get better once the e-tec gets past its 20hr mark and the engine management system kicks into 'lean' mode. Hard for me to compare the 'quietness' of the e-tec at normal run/cruise speed (say 3,500 - 4,500 rpm) to a 4-stroke because I have not been in many boats running a 150hp 4-stroke to compare against. Motor is going to be scary once out of 'safe' mode.......definitely want to tighten up that throttle friction cause all you need to do is nudge the throttle when you come down off a bigger set and before you know it you are launching off the next one!!

Hope the info helps.....

Hi Alan, glad to hear the new baby is soon to be delivered.

Of interest, knowing how hard you reviewed the power choice do you have a list of prices for the different motors you looked at and the $ for the etec you decided on?

The 150hp on a 575 should go like the clappers!

..an interesting chat.
I'm wondering how heavy these new CC's are?
I'm repowering a 1979 Reef Ranger and considering a 150hp (yes - some of us just can't afford new ones) The dry hull weight is ~850kg (ie. no motor). This was considered 'heavy' for a 18 footer. But the weights I've been hearing here tell me the 575 isn't much lighter??

Baycruiser
24-04-2006, 06:19 PM
c/craft advised me that my 2003 model 575 explorer weighs in @ ~825 kg.

Alan_L
24-04-2006, 07:29 PM
Sorry, bit of mis-information given, I said the weight was approx 1900kgs fully loaded with full fuel, safety and personal gear, I forgot that this included the trailer of 500Kg. Weight quoted on Cruise Craft site is 1720kg with 130hp 2 stroke + safety gear + 100lt fuel + trailer.

I would think that the dry hull weight would be around the 850kg mark, but you would have to contact Cruise Craft to confirm that.

Hi Alan. Took a few pics showing

1. the spot and the cable penetrating above to bow sprit
2. cable at the top of the bow sprit then entering the anchor well
3. cable in the anchor well and then entering a length of 20mm electrical conduit that I siliconed to the inside of the cabin, following the bow rail bolts. It took a while for this to cure while being propped in position.
4. cable leaving the conduit and going in behind the control panel wiring area
5. Control panel mounted below key position, very convenient for easy use

Hi guys, major depression has set in, :'( NO BOAT for this weekend. Delivery date is now next Thursday. We'll see. ::)

Kids now think we are telling them porkies about getting a boat.

Apparently I'll end up with the new modified cockpit liners, with built in rod holders, cup holders, cockpit lights, new type Cruise Craft trailer etc. It will be worth the wait, but I must admit my patience is slowly running out, especially now I've missed all the long weekends. >:(

Another weekend in the bloody garden. >:(.

I'll try somehow to put them off for at least a week to get some fishing in.

Hope to be on the water on saturday, and definitely Sunday.

Alan -ask me if I'm jelous!!!

I'm really sorry to have only picked up on this thread tonight, but I guess I would only have endorsed your selection. I have a 575 with a 130 Yammi direct injection and I still absolutely love the combination after a year or so of ownership. The only thing I would change is the engine - not for the power aspect, but for the 4 stroke economy. I don't think mine is under powered and with trim down, it gets out of the hole quick smart and lively. I recon its sweet-spot is at 3,900 RPM, nose up a little and it is delivering 0.8 nautical miles / litre and making 22 knots. It is really comfortable here at its best economy and I really don't want to go any faster. I have, of course, and the economy only suffers very slightly until you get to WOT.

I'm dead set sure you will enjoy it.
