I have the 50hp 4str suzuki. good motor. servicing costs about $200 every 6 months. I'd look at the Etec's as the first 3 years have no servicing costs and they seem to be built ruggedly to do that.

I've got the Suzuki DF70. After adjusting the height it was mounted, it's great. It's only had the initial service post-run in, and it wasn't too dear.

Compare the weight and displacement between the two to help with your decision. There's also a rather heated debate going on right now in another thread further down...

Good luck,
Mike

boodo, i currently use twin 140hp suzukis and they are great, i can't prasie them enough. I personaly wouldn't touch an e-tec..... becuase really, it's still a 2-stroke. The etecs dont have as good a fuel consumption and i'm sceptic on the "300"hour no-service.

I don't worry about service prices on my suzi's becuase dealers charge the earth and i do it myself. There just like a car engine and all thats really required is change the oil and filters inspect/grease everything every 100hours(but i do it at 50), Every 200hours i change the spark plugs, gear case oil, fuel filters etc... and every 500 the impellers. It's surprising how easy it is to service the engines and it costs me about $90 for the 2 engines. Of course the "Major" service every 200hours cost more.

Sounds like the dealer is hookin' it in to you a bit there orbyroo. #:-?

I'll say no more cause I don't want to get into an argument with your dealer but you have an initial 20hr service, then the 50hr which is just an oil change & inspection which we only charge an hour for, 100hr which isn't as big as the 20hr then it's just every 100hrs. Know what they say in the book but it's going a bit overboard. The service manual doesn't exactly recipriocate the little service booklet you get.

I do the service work by the book but need only do it every year unless you rack up the hours of course.

The DF50 Zuks have a cam chain not a belt that runs under the powerhead in a constant oil bath so it doesn't wear out and is garuanteed for the life of the motor so you don't have to go changing and checkin' belts all the time. Got a couple of DF115's on a crabber's boat that's done over 3300 hours now without any dramas with the chains.

They also use shim buckets on the valves instead of rockers and after I've done the initial 20hr inspection, they never seem to shift. I still check them every 200 hours as your spose to do.

I'll stop yapping anyway about that and just give you a few specs on the DF70's if you don't already have them:

1298cc's, 162kgs in long shaft, throttle range 5,200 - 5,800 rpms.
The Zuk DF60/70 is the only 4 stroke Suzuki that still shares componentry with a car (Suzuki Alto) and still has a belt. Suzuki are actually working on a new 60/70 right now so might be worth the wait, apparently going to weigh about the same as the 50/40 110kgs and have alot more get up and go.

The 60/70 would have to be the least refined in the Suzuki 4 stroke range but having said that is still a gutsy, smooth reliable engine and know plenty of owners happy with them. Depends on what your after though if you just want a good fishing motor they're definitely the go.

Can get some phone numbers if you like of some customers that own them. #;)

Other people interested may also like to know Suzuki are also coming out with a new DF300 soon! A bored out 4 litre version of the current V6's which only weigh 263kgs in XL as it is.

They'll finally be coming out with some flash in house gauges to replace the current commander gauges (bit like smartcraft) and fly by wire option in all later K7's coming out. Never ceases to amaze me what a awesome variety of engines we have to choose from today. :)

Love ta see Evinrude keep up to that, even 3 old rude carbbied V8 300's would struggle, probably run out of fuel before it hit the finish line!!! #;D ;D

What did I miss something? are you guys racers or fishermen??.Reliability and cost effectiveness is all I give a bugger about.900 horses is just a big waste of fuel and no doubt achieves speeds in excess of what would be safe on the water.Just waiting for some Di#!!@head to fit a jet engine to his boat next!!-all this oneupmanship with motor brands is a waste of time.Jace. PS-does any manufacturer actually make a crap motor these days?.

Boodoo,
As advised before, wait for the new Suzuki 70 to come out this year & have a close look at them. I just bought a new 90 E-Tec & I'm more than happy with it. I wanted a 90hp Suzuki initially, but it was just too heavy. I'll going to be better off with an E-Tec anyway, as they really are a no fuss, practical motor.

Here's the differences between the current DF70 Zuk and the 75 E Tec anyway Boodoo:

Suzuki DF70 4 Stk: 1298cc, 162kgs, Inline 4 cylinder
Evinrude 75 E Tec: 1295cc, 138kgs, Inline 3 cylinder

I think Wear the fox hat is right though boodoo, hold on & wait for the new Suzi 70 to come out. They should only weigh around 110kgs according to my service rep and will have a heaps more go too.

While we're on the subject how much was your 90 E Tec WTFH?

Just tryin' to figure why a customer's still stuck between workin' out wether he wants the 90Zuk or the 90Rude.

Our DF90 Zuk is $10,800 fitted.

Suzuki DF90 4 Stk: 188kgs, 1950cc, Inline 4
Evinrude 90 E Tec: 138kgs, 1285cc, Inline 3

There's the obvious weight differences but his boat probably wouldn't mind an extra 40kgs in the bum anyway as she's a bit nosy at the moment or so he says.

If you could answer this it would be much appreciated, ta. Kopey

Boodo,

Pick your motor on colour and how it would look on your boat. ;D I tell you what, I'm sure you will be happy with whatever your choice. These days all motors are good.

Then you can get on these forums and talk up your choice.

Good luck

Today, tommorow, give Richard Martin a ring on 4124 2682 tommorow morning. We're located in Hervey Bay.

Yes that's right $10, 800 fitted will get you a brand new 2006 Suzuki DF90 fitted - (may be a touch more depending on fit up like say centre console set up where we have to pull all the floor up etc to run cables, standard runabout or half cab fine).

boodo,

I'm not going to get into the E-tec V Suzuki debate. I'm tired of the same old stuff being dragged through the dirt because someone likes to push a certian product.

I've have owned a Mercury 4 stroke, which I loved, my old man has a Tohatsu which is also a great motor. and I now own a 90 e-tec and I'm very happy with it.

I would also love the Suzuki 4 stroke as I was in the same boat as WTFH's reply.

You have probably read every post on here to do with the e-tec's and Suzuki's. Don't get to caught up in the dealer hype. Ask the guys coming back in at the boat ramps after a day on the water what they think of their motor.

Time better spent than talking to a dealer.

I'm very happy with my choice todate, so I can recommend the e-tec.

hi boodoo,

i got my new boat about 6 weeks ago and sounds about the same size as yours. mine is a blue fin 4.75m phantom (aluminium) , maximum rating is 75hp ,and i got a 75 etec on the back. i was nervous as hell for the 8 weeks it took to build from all the negative reports i have heard about the etecs. so far i have had no problems. it starts first time every time, doesnt use much fuel (my first boat so i dont have much to compare it with though). if you are interested in the speed i get in the boat it has a top speed of 29knots or 56kph. the motor seems very quiet as well. hope this helps
