I recently bought a mooloolaba pick and am wondering what is the best way to rig it?

I know you put the chain to the anchoring end of the anchor and run the chain up the shaft but what is the best way to attach the chain to the shaft and have it strong enough to hold anchor but be able to snap when you wan't to release your anchor from the bottom?

I tried this afternoon with a cable tie and as soon as it anchored the tie snapped and we started drifting, do you reckon maybe 2 or more ties ? they are the standard 4.8mm ties

We use zip ties when we anchor and does the trick nicely. Maybe try a size up.

when i worked on a charter boat out of mooloolaba on a 55 ft westcoaster we used white vb cord but i think this would be to strong for a small boat i use 2 small cable ties on mine or a short length of 70lb mono no worries

Half a dozen ties, keeps the chain tight on the shaft, less chance of snagging.

I use a short length of clothesline rope takes a little bit to break but doesn't let go and you get your anchor back, never had much luck with cable ties.

G'day
Just a quick one, enlighten me on a "mooloolaba pick" It's obviously some kind of anchoring device.... What's it do?

use a large cable tie wrap it around chain and anchor loop twice before inserting back into snap section of tie ;)

Mooloolaba pick.
A stumpy anchor which looks like a cross between a sand anchor and a reef.
Note.. the chain secondary connection witn a cable tie. This enables reverse removal when stuck in a "Mooloolaba" reef.

Dont use the anchor much, but I tied mine off with a bit of 100lb jinkai.

I use that technique on any anchor: sand, Plow, CQ, whatever .....................!

Most of them have a strong tie down point at the bottom of the shaft and can be tied off up the shaft with several turns of some strong nylon string.

Never seen an actual Mooloolaba pick before! Are they for reef, sand or everything?

Another anchor tip whilst talking anchors. 8-) A 27" bike tube covering the chain will queiten the anchor launch (less fish spook)and minimise bow scratches.

KGW2, thanks for the tyre tube tip. Never thought of that. Simple idea but brilliant.

Cheers.

I always used copper wire from power cable. Will not rust and will also take some scratching from rocks but will break under heavy load.

the inner tube also is supposed to protect reef (coral) from the direct contact of the chain a little better ....................... apparently. that's what i always got told anyway. never seen one of those m'bah anchors though.
