I just read heath' post on led trailer lights, which has prompted this post.

I recently installed led nav lights, as I fish often at night and worry about power usage pumps radio etc. I thought led would be the way to go to save a bit of power. What I didn't expect was how bright the led lights would be, a real surprise very bright little power use, look good and can leave them on without worrying. So if ur considering led I think there a winner at this stage.Only time will tell how long they last.

cheers bear

hey bear , maybe im wrong but arent nav lights for under steam then anchor light at rest ?

hence battery drain is not a issue , or can you have nav lights at anchor ?

I have also thought about LED nav lights thought I might try some LED designed to replace existing bulbs first they are cheaper than buying the whole nav lights .

You shouldn't mate - if you do, it appears to other vessels that you're underway (or drifting) and not at anchor. Only the anchor light should be lit when at anchor.
Check the MSQ website for all the details.

Good luck,

Like Mike said.

If I am underway and approaching a boat and see your starboard light and stearn light, I will expect that you are under way and you will deviate your course (because I have right of way). Or, if I was heading towards you I would expect that you would be continuing on your way and pass left to right by the time I reach you. I will not be expecting you to be anchoured. I would not be at all pleased with the skipper as I have to deviate around when I realise you are not going to give way or pass by.

If you have ever wondered why people motor so close to you and then deviate close when you are at anchour, you now have the answer. They did not know you were at anchour.

If you are at a known fishing spot then I usually assume you could be at anchour, but in the open water I would not be expecting it.

Turn off your running lights at night when anchoured. It is the law and makes sense.

I just find anchor lights dim and hard to identify where nav lights lights are more standoutish safer imo obviously not to the powers to be though thanks for your comments guys.

At least bear has all his lights on.
I was coming back from the banks the other night at 25kts. It was a beaut night, all glassed out. Well we missed hitting some jerk anchored about 5 miles out from Mooloolaba. He went down our right side by about 30m, had no lights on at all.
I nearly turned around to abuse him but figured it wouldn't help as I was pretty peeved and likely to let fly. >:(

Thats what I am using in my nav lights. The replacement LED globes. They work a treat.
I also sealed up my nav lights once I made the replacement too with Sikaflex. Over 12 months & still going strong.

i was told by a boat Manufacturer that led nav lights are considered illegal by transport for being not bright enough . that same Manufacturer will only fit the old style and the customer can fit led after they take delivery .

The replacement BA9s LED bulbs cost me $4.99 for both delivered 8-) Just make sure you get the wide angle ones ;) as the normal ones throw the light upward and are dull once you put them in. Wide angle ones throw the light out horizontally like a normal incandescant bulb.

I think this dealer is pulling your leg, he probably gets the traditional type cheaper or he has heaps in stock he needs to offload. led navigation lights are as good if not brighter than using bulbs. When you drive down the street you will notice that traffic lights are now fitted with led's. You will notice that they are brighter than the bulbs. Also various new cars now use them as brake lights. Not all led's have the same brightness though he may be comparing to some inferior types.
