Hi all,
Am looking at buying a boat to do a bit of reef fishing off Rockhampton/Gladstone area. I am leaning towards a Haines v17c at this point, anyone who owns one seems to love them. My dad had one when I was a kid and we used it for offshore work as well as crabbing in the creeks, with a 175 Merc it was also a rocket! Just wanting to know what size outboards people run on thiers and what sort of economy/range they are getting from them. It would also be good if you could give me some aprox performance figures as well.

Thanks.
Dave.

Dave I had 17L, same hull just different deck, with a 100hp Yamaha 4 stroke. Did about 32Knots WOT, used 33 litres for 38 nmiles at 4200rpm and 22knots. It wasn't a rocket ship, but who can in open water. If that's not fast enough a 115 is probably ideal. Happy hunting Pete.

hey mate i had a 150hp yammie ('90 model 2 stroke) on the back of my v17c and it was awesome. 80km/hr flat out and because of such a big motor it was never working hard therefore little fuel used. i did a trip to the 50's of southport one day when i have to admit it was calm but we did 87kms in the total trip and when i refuelled her shed only used 66ltrs of juice. bloody good if u ask me. on ruff trips she would average about 1km per litre or better not too bad for a 2 banger

cheers matt

You'd be hard pressed to go past a Haines.

I had a V17R with 115 Yammie 2s. Ave 1 mile per LT, cruise at 4000rpm @ 30mph. Trim her out on a good day she do just under 50mph @ WOT 5600RPM.

Second best boat I ever had ... #::)

Thanks guys, 1 mile per litre I can live with. Have any of you had pods put on your v17's? Just wondering how this affects the handling of the boat? I'm not sure if I should shell out big $$ for a boat in good original condition or buy a cheapie that needs floor, transom etc replaced and get the work done. After all, you would then know that the boat would be good for another 20+ years.

Thanks.
Dave.

Hi Tony..hi Chris...Dave,in my opinion forget the pod idea unless you can find someone who actually has one..dont risk wrecking a great hull design..
a late model 115 is the ideal engine for a v17..or an older 135/140..my old
115 yammy is getting a little tied but still goes great..cruises on around
28-30MPH AT 4400RPM & gives good economy(havent actually worked it out properly but around 2 kms per litre)
Cheers,James

Thanks James,
I'll hunt around for a good original one. It will be a while before I start shopping, have to tidy up my current rig and sell it before I can spend $$.

Just thought I would add this to see if anyone knows this boat, I found the classified add for it but think it could be an old one. I think it has an ausfish sticker on the side so maybe someone here could help. Would be good to know if this boat is still for sale.
Thanks.

Dave,

stickers not an AF one, but does look like a Buds Bait & Tackle one from memory.
So could be a Redlands boat maybe... :-?
