Got a job, helping my brother, replace his round trailer axle, and brakes.

Question is,does anyone have any experience, in setting up the brackets, that welds to the axle, that holds the override disc brakes.

The part to weld on is shaped half round, to weld at right angles,to the axle, and the other end has two threaded holes, to take the bolts that hold the brakes in position.
Do you fit the bearings, and disks to the axle, with the calipers, and then see where the bracket should be welded.
Does anyone know of a good web site perhaps

Hey Dave,

Mate, done heaps of these...

Once the axle is fitted, pack the bearings, and fit the
rotors as you normally would.

attatch the rabbit ears (mounting brackets) to the calipers
finger tight, and fit the caliper to the rotor, adjust the height
until the top of the friction material on the brake pad is
even with the outside edge of the rotor, and tighten the
adjuster bolt on the inside pad, so the caliper is
clamped to the rotor.

The calipers must be in the 3 o'clock position, starboard side,
and 9 o'clock port side, both pointing towards the drawbar.

Have the sliding bushes(that the mount bolts go thru)
positioned as close as to the rotor side, so that the caliper
can slowly "self adjust" out as the pads wear.

Once this is done, loosen the mount bolt so you can
sit the mount bracket as snug as possible to the axle,
tighten them up again, then weld it up.

Harry.

Harry,

Many thanks.Great stuff.Found a web site as well, and copied the attachment. Does the galvanising (axle)have to be removed before welding

Hi Dave.

Yes, use a marker pen and allow approx 15mm or so
around the base of where you're going to weld
and grind the gal off.

Touch up with cold gal when finished the job.

Just to add, when you first fit the rotor to the axle,
don't fit the inner hub seal yet.

Once you've got the caliper aligned, put a couple of
tack welds to hold the bracket on,

then remove the rotor so you can fully weld the bracket on.

Good luck!

Harry
