View Full Version : Boat theft and Insurance
If you keep your boat in a shed that is not lockable and it gets pinched ,with no anti theft devices would you be covered by insurance.

Arrh, probably not mate
Check your policy is the only way to be sure
Can you wrap some chain around one of the beams in the shed and lock it to the trailer ?
Those anti theft devices are only about $30 nowdays, I think this site sells them

should be......but by having an anti theft lock on the coupler usually lowers the excess.

Troy, provided you have told your insurer on how your boat is stored it should not be a problem. On my boat insurance it is actually listed on the policy. I would ask for this so there are no arguments if the worst happens.

Troy, to answer your question, it may depend who your insurer is. Some might pay up, others might not. No 100% garantee.
Check with your insurer, detailing where and how your boat is stored and ask what is the minimum form of antitheft equipment required. In my policy it actually states that it is stored in an open carport within view from the street with a trailer hitch lock and a chain on the trailer. The minimum they asked for was a trailer hitch lock. Would love to be able to store it out of sight, but not possible at present address.
Other insurance companies might require higher levels of antitheft. It better to be forewarned than getting into a bunfight after something has happened. Whatever their answer is, get it in writing.

Club marine and racq both said that in the event of a theft I would need to show a photograph of my trailer with the coupling lock fitted.
The reason i started this thread is because of what the above posts have said.
These days claiming insurance on theft is not cut and dry and it needs for all of us to find out where we stand.
At the boat ramps are we covered if our trailer gets pinched and we do not have some sort of theft protection.
I have a mate that was in this position and the insurers are refusing to pay due to him not having a anti theft device.
Bottom line in my opinion is if they want it badly enough they will take it.
