They are a derated 18hp Tohatsu, they are painted black, they have more power than the standard 15hp Merc, the US model has the all in one F-N-R+stop all in the tiller handle whereas the Japanese super model does not. They're gutsy motors, near bulletproof, and for their price, very good value. I own a 30hp Mariner 2006 mdl (rebadged Tohatsu also) and it's powerful and reliable, good on fuel too. Cheers, Joey.

I own a current model 18hp Tohatsu, which is the same as the US mercury.
I find it to be very easy to start (1st pull warm 2 pulls cold)
She pushes my 3.75 Cody along at a respectable 35-37 kph.
I have not long had the 10 hour service done, and it cost me $150.
I bought the motor from Bribie Boats after ringing around and visiting all the marine places around North brisbane
The Tohatsu was the best value for money as far as I could make out. Beating the merc equivalent by a couple of hundred dollars.
Take my advice and buy the Tohatsu. :-) You'll save time and dollars!
