As some of you know, we moved up to Brisbane from Melbourne last Christmas.

Only now am I getting around to changing all the vehicles over to Queensland registration.

So last week I changed over my licence and a car, that involved getting a safety inspection done on the car and presenting the car for visual verification of the VIN number and engine number. The Licence change was a matter of presenting my Victorian licence, proving who I am and then verification of a Queensland address (all as you would expect).

Today was time to go down again and this time change over a motorbike and the boat.

To get the motorbike swapped over I had to get a safety inspection and once again present it for a visual verification of the chassis number and the engine number.

HOWEVER, to get the boat into Queensland registration all I had to do was fill out a form and pay the fee, no need to present it for their visual verification of numbers. I understand that moored boats can't be presented to their office, but they are not the likely target of thieves.

To me trailer boats should be reqired to be presented for inspection if you have to change the rego over, I certainly had to present it to get it registered when back I was back in Vic.

Seems to me that the rules are a bit slack in this area.

I agree, I registered a boat trailer once that didn't have the little plate fitted with VIN inscribed on it and was told no problem a new plate was $7 and they issued me with a new VIN to put on it. Must be real hard for a thief to rebirth a trailer.

Thanks for letting us know of this ::)

Having been a victim of trailer theft I now know why the trailer was never found again :'(

So what can be done to change this??

Hi all
in regards to Garrys comment the only way to change the laws of rego for Baots an Trailers is to lobby the Minsters office for transport that is if they will listen but by not only requests but also together with information as to why this should be changed most Trailers have a vin number on them if not they should be like boats and cars have a vin no placed on them by transport this will cut down on the thief of a second best friend along with the vessels just my thoughts but the only way past the red tape of insurance

Cheers ;D ;D

Mr Bean... Did you notice that once you pay for a boat licence here.. You NEVER pay again.. And You don't even need a fishing licence at all.. Back home it's 25 buckaziods every year for both.. These Queenslanders are a bit slow in learning how rip off the Angler..
Maybe Pete is waiting to get voted back in... then... W H A M.... :-[

Hi Darren,

Good to hear #you've settled.

Your post got me thinking.

What can be done to a trailer that would identify it,
that can't be "undone" or modified by thieves,
that all manufacturers and importers could utilise and
apply, cost effectively?

Even Datadots can be painted over.

I think the governments put it into the "too hard or too expensive"
basket, as 90 odd % of trailers sold retail from $800 to around $4k,
unlike motor vehicles, which theft poses a much bigger,
more expensive issue.

I think its best up to the individual owners to be dilligent and
creative in securing your trailer so that the opportunistic
thieves will look for an easier target, while bearing in mind
that if they really want your trailer, they'll probably find a
way to get it.

Keep your insurance policy current.

Harry.

Agree with the previous posts, but I suppose my surprise was the boat not the trailer.

Even though the regulations require that the boat must have a Hull Identification Number and a Builders Identification Plate, no-one is actually checking it is all in order before allowing the rego to be changed over.

My boat could have been anybody's boat.

Ironic part is that because the trailer is carrying greater than 750kg, I do actually have to present that for their inspection.

I am changing my boat and trailer over in the next few days. Trailer load is less than 750 so I don't have to present either. Simply take the plates in !!!

And that is my point Gunna, what is the use of having traceable serial numbers if nobody actually traces them.

KGW2,

I think there are swings and roundabouts but not much difference overall.

Back in Vic I had a 10 year licence, here maximum of 5 years.

XR650 motorbike cost $398 for 12 months rego and CTP in Vic, but only $217 in QLD for the same.

Boat was about $40 in Vic but is $137 in QLD.

Landcruiser was nearly double to rego here in QLD.

So I think you win on some but loose on others.
