Yeah, me again :)

Going to buy a couple new reef picks/chains and ropes for my boat, 5.2 glass half cab. How do you work out what size rope to use and the guage of the steel in the anchor? Too small is not good (obviously) but too big takes up precious space. Also how much anchor rope do you guys carry, looking at anchoring in, say, 20-30M of water?

Thanks.
Dave.

my setup is basic, i got 2meters fo 8mm chain with 100meters of 8mm rope, but i brought pretty much the largers pick , about $22, and fill it with lead,
i actually have 3 achors on my boat, 2 sand and 1 reef, all are heavy duty ones,

also get one of those reef pick holders, similear to rod holders at the bow of the boat. saves alot of space.

20-30meter of water, you only need say 50m.

Cant help with anchor size but if you carry 3 to 4 times the depth you normally fish (30 to 40m depth=about 120m rope length) in about 12mm size and 8 to 10 m of 10mm chain I cant imagine you would go to far wrong .

G'day
As for the anchor.. start with one suitable for the bottom you're likely to encounter. The chain.... It should be at least the length of your boat as a rule of thumb. The rope.. generally a 3:1 ratio for calm conditions and up to 7:1 (i think) for adverse conditions. For yourself, I'd say 100M should get you out of trouble. Make it 12.. silver rope.

12 mm x 100 mtrs and 2 mtrs of 8 mm gal chain is the way to go.

I'd go with Blackened, and carry the extra chain for a 5m+ glass boat, especially anchoring in open, exposed areas.

I think 12mm rope is an over kill for that size boat
I have 10mm rope on a 6m glass boat and you cant even look like breaking it if your anchors stuck.
12 mm rope takes up way to much room too
so I would want
min of 100m x 10mm silver rope
5 metre of short link chain
couple of differnt anchors
zip ties to put through the shackle after changing anchors
cheers

Thanks guys, Going with 100m of 8mm nylon rope, stronger than 12mm silver and supposed to be THE best anchor rope going, if you believe the advertising blurb. 5m of 8mm chain and 2 different size reef picks, I'll see which one suits best.

Thanks.
Dave.

one of the troubles with small diameter rope is the diffuclty in raising the anchor, 12mm not bad to pull, 10mm not as good, 8mm even worse. Small rope tends to be hard to grip.
