View Full Version : Flow coat problems

I decided to take off the old tranducer and stuff not being used on the back of the Haines.
I bought some flowcoat and the instructions said 7ml catalyst in 500ml of flowcoat. Seeing as there are 37drops in a ml I figured loosely that enough flowcoat to cover the bottom of a paper cup should be enough with 3drops... Ok that took forever to set so next day I tried 10drops, still damn slow but at least it was not sticky two days later (hasn't been that cold but under 20deg at night).
I rubbed back the holes I wanted to patch, cleaned with acetone and painted on the flowcoat. Within minutes the existing coating started to crinkle up.
I've redone the same process and got exactly the same result hence the enlargement of the patch area. This transom has been rebuilt and I note the coating may be a bit thin on top of the grey "undercoat" or whatever goes on first.

Any ideas and how do I fix?

you are trying to flowcoat a transom that has been painted
the grey stuff is primer
you are better off to repaint it
sand the whole are that is damaged to a smooth finish and then spray with 2 pack primer and then a couple of coats of 2 pack paint

yep looks like paint bubble to me, not gelcoat, so i guess best bet is to sand back and repaint.

yep, thats frying up!!! mostly caused by the solvent you are using is stronger than the finish on the boat. i'm with blaze. follow that and you'll be ok!
better check with seahorse though ;D ;D

Bugga, I was starting to guess that was the case. Sure as candy didn't behave like flowcoat! :(

Can I get 2pak in small amounts that I can spray myself or do I need to go the whole hog and get it professionally done?

J got this from Chris tonight mate, he has been having trouble logging on.

As has been suggested the transom is painted in two pack - thus the grey undercoat . I did not have the equipment or the expertise to do it in gelcoat and it was sent to the paint shop to be done in two pack . Cannot expand on the brand etc. Sorry , it must not have come up in our discussions before . Have asked Brett to post this - my login is not working .

Yeah thats sweet, thanks for passing that on. Now that I know what I'm dealing with it won't be a problem.
Thanks.
