Im thinking getting one, but.I remember anyone i known with merc had a problem ,and if ya see some broken down on the water it would be most likely a chrysler or a merc ,older style of course. My question is are the new ones more reliable ?Or better stay away and stick with a yammies?
thanks a heap

Go the Merc :)
Ooh the arguements are going to start.
In all honestly the new Merc can't be compared to Mercs the same age as the Chryslers.
Neither can a 30 year old Yammi be compared to the Yammi today.
The Chryslers. Well that's a different story really ;)
Any new motor can break down no matter what brand, breed, creed, race or colour.
I'd be doing some research on really, really good service guys in your area. They're the ones that gunna fix it so why not ask them which brand they don't get to fix all the time.
That's the hard bit, getting a really good service guy. :-[

G'day
As finga said.
Seriously, most outboards are on par with eachother these days. especially the 2 strokes, as they are such basic technology. Find the best match for yor boat. Start with desired horsepower, then weight and cubic capacity, as this will give you an idea of fuel economy and torque. Go the mercs!

manshild, I have a 60 HP 2 stroke (2 1/2 yrs old) and am very happy with it. Can be a bit thirsty if you are going flat stick on a long trip.
Pushes my 4.75 stessco runabout along at 30 knots.

chryslers were a great basic motor threre problems started when merc started adding there parts to them thats when the s##t hit the fan
The statement about "All outboards on a par these days" is pretty much correct. If you pay more.. you get more, so a nice new 4 st Honda will be nice,. but 20% more than it's closest competitor.
There are millions of Mercs around, so you will hear good and bad about them. Chryslers were great in the late 70's but are pretty old now.
If you buy an "Old" 2st Merc, don't go below about #1982-3 (last Blueband).
Reasons.. Drive shaft was not stainless steel, and if the motor was not serviced regularly, you, may never get the leg off. Also, after 20 or so years, there will likely be corrosion in the wiring and corroded water cover (around plugs). Hving said that.. I have owned 3 and now own a new Mariner 2st which is a Merc with a silver cowl cover. Just like a Jonno is a white Evinrude.
Just keep the fuel fresh, and service the water pump regularly, and remove and grease the drive shaft and prop now and then and it will outlive YOU.

Yeah for a basic two stroke out board ya cant go wrong, got one on a 455 quiny, pushes it a 32mile (50hp) havent have a problme with it yet (4yr old) has bout 200hrs on it, but as great white said can chew a bit if holding her open. We pull single skiers out the water with it n for its purpose atm wouldnt go for nething else. The only downside i guess is that they are slightly heavire than say a yamaha.

I had a 50 merc on a 445 Bermuda Viper that we modified to Centre console... found the motor very reliable and fuel efficient...could get nearly 60klm from 25litres, never had any problems over the 4 years we owned it...
Cheers
