gday ribbit , ive had a few winches and i currently have a winch called"stress free anchor winch" on my cat and it is a top worker. it is a drum system, retreving rope at a metre every 1.5_2 seconds and i can count on my hand how many times ive had to touch the rope in the last year. Now this unit may be a bit overkill for you, but im sure thay would have one smaller to suit your boat

thanks insideout, the stressfree is the one I actually want but they are $1799 for a small one. @#$!...
I know some guys who use them and swaer bu them.
South pacific are cheap but have to use short link chain which weighs stuff all.
thanks

All winches that use a gypsy require short link chain, no shackles and the anchor line backspliced onto the chain.

Have you looked into a Muir?

Or perhaps a Quick (Italian made) supplied via BLA. They have a large range. A Quick Aster 500 (500Watts) is suited for boats from 6-9mtrs in length, product code 153336, and has a rec retail of $1363. Or there is the Quick Aster 700 (700Watts), suited for boats 7-10mtrs in length, product code 153342 wiuth a rec retail of $1545.

There are many others.

Cheers

We are using a South Pacific 710F on a 17' Seafarer Ventura. We upgraded the nylon gypsy to a stainless one before installing, as recommended by someone else on this site.

Please check this thread from when I made a query about South Pacific.

my hesitation was mate had a motor up and down version and was too slow on drop. also he was told only 3mtrs shortlink chain which was too light for our fast tidal flow.
I emailed them and they now say 6 mtrs of short link ok.
how much chain do u run?
thanks

I prefer the old "ride on" model
Been married to her for 20 years and never lost a pick

We have the model with freefall drop. We use about 3 meters of chain. We did have some teething problems with setting the anchor and retrieval at first. The chain was coming up twisted and binding up in the gypsy so Ross added a swivel between the chain and anchor which seems to have solved those initial problems.
