My uncle just bought a second hand 200hp Evinrude outboard 2000 Model Ram Injection. He was told by the salesman that he had to run Evinrude XD50 oil @ $230 for 20 litres. Does anyone know if this is correct or can any TCW3 oil be used.
Thanks Guys

Sounds to me like he's on a commission from evinrude :-?

nope he is correct, use the correct oil, it is much dearer but the engine uses bugger all and they will last for yonks, had my 115's on the right stuff and they have over 2,000 hours on them now, trust the dealer on that one, not too sure about the price he is charging as I have not purchased any for a while now.

I wonder if they could run on Quicksilver Premium Plus oil, because I have some of this oil for my 30hp 2s, it's not direct injected but on the bottle it says that this oil is suitable for all DFI 2 stroke outboards. I bought it for $26 for 3.78L from Anaconda at one of their sales, would work out cheaper than the xd50 oil, but you must also consider if this oil is suitable and if the engine will use more of it, if it uses a lot more then it may not be worthwhile. Cheers.

By the way roofmanau, did you buy the 200 from a dealer?? if so make sure it has had all the updates done to it, the V6 Fichts did not have a great reputation, I think a 2000 model SHOULD have been OK though.

Joey_1987 I have used the quicksilver oil, but I currently used the valvoline product only as its 5L for $21 - $25 depending on where and when its purchased.

I have 150 FICHT. Advice I have got from many is only to use XD50. Also run only PULP fuel. In reality only adds a few extra dollars to each trip. Added bonus of no smoke and fumes.
Re the cost of XD50, last month I picked up my last 5 gal (19l) pail from the the evinrude dealer at Capalaba for around $140 and they couriered it to my door for door for an extra $10.
cheers

I also use valvoline oil for my Yamaha outboards it was what the previous owner was using and I continued. Don't think you can beat it for price.
Valvoline You Know what I Mean...//////

hi all
i use for my 2s either valvoline $22 - $26 for 5Ltr or shell nautilus $24 - $28 for 5ltr and have never had any trouble and always use PULP 115hp yamaha 89 model
roofmanau i would ring around a few of the Johno and evinrude dealers as they are one in the same motors and see what they suggest you could also call these guys great mechanic talk to
mark or shane 3805-8595 southside marine wreckers and outboard mechanic's if they say then you know the deal
Cheers ;D ;D

roofmanau,
When OMC went belly up they could not supply the ficht oil for there customers so they rang where I work to see what we were using so they could recommend something to there customers (we were sponsored by OMC).
We got the first 3 x 225 ficht engines in the country in 1999 and ran caltex super outboard in them with no problems. we averaged 900 hours a year on each engine and bought the super outboard oil in 44 gallon drums and never had a problem with them.
super outboard is TCw3 rated so if you want an alternative go for that

xd50 is actually a snow mobile?/PWC oil scientifically rated to an entirely higher standard than typical O/B oils. It is light years ahead of lowly rated TCW3 oils which make a relatively poor job of lubrication in an outboard when compared to what else is out there (we can all thank the greenies for the poor standard that tcw3 actually attains).
There are other oils just as good out there some are also identical with a different name but they will not be any of the common crop (technology) of tcw3 oils we can easily find in Oz.
Your mission if you choose to accept it - check on some of the 2 stroke motorbike watercooled oils and PWC oils with a fair bit of detective work with google in hand you will nut it all out given time and will also find comparable oils at probably near half the cost although they will not say "for use in outboard motors" on the bottle.
cheers fnq

Thanks for the replies guys. I knew there must have been cheaper alternatives to use. The trouble is that the dealers only want to sell you what they are making the greatest margin on and that is usually there recommended oil.
Garry, PM me with your details so I can bring my Honda down for its next service.
Cheers
Steve ;)

Be careful!!!!!!!
The Ram Ficht injected engines suffered a lot of failures and bad press due to blown motors in the early days which eventually brought OMC unstuck.
They worked hard to fix the problems that steemed from carbon build up when operating at light to trolling type loads. When the power was put back on again for the trip home and things heated up the rings would stick due to the carbon and could not expand properly causing piston seizure and major engine failure. In many cases with outboards that had run less than 100 hours.
The fixes that OMC put in place were significant place and included redesigned cylinder heads and engine management changes etc along with better cleaner burning oils. Not that the oils needed much better lubrication but more importantly needed cleaner burning.
DO NOT use a cheaper oil, stick with the factory recommended XD-50 oils or the savings on oil will be greatly outweighed on engine rebuilds. As these outboards are not that common due to the early version problems the parts are harder to get and more expensive than other 2 strokes.
Although many others are saying use the cheaper oils which is true in general terms it's not in this case, they are not running Ficht engines.
I'd also check about using the XD-100 oil which is dearer again but the oiling rate can be re-programmed to 1/2 the use of the XD-50 oil.
Cheers Mark

Mark, thats more or less what I said in the first reply, you can use old sump oil from your car if you want to, but an engine rebuild very shortly will soon offset being a cheap skate! the difference in the PROPER oil is really not bad when you conside how much less oil the ficht will use.

I use to use valvaline but have changed to shell
I find the valvaline seems to be smokier than the shell in my motor (merc efi225).
