hey guys well i have a 80hp mercury 2 stroke 4 cylinder and basically the engine runs fine when going but when you let it sit for more then 5 mins it takes ages to start usually after about 15mins of cranking it starts with heaps of smoke out the exhaust which indicates that its flooded i guess. also stalls in reverse then takes ages to start. but the funny thing is when i get it home and go to flush the motor the damm thing starts first go(explain that)

well i am just trying to find out some info off you guys to see what the problem could be.

any ideas would be great thanks

my thoughts are on the muffs there is no back pressure on the exhaust side of the pistons so it spins easier.
Try using the cold start lever next to the gear/throttle lever, put this to max postion when doing a cold start. Put a new set of plugs in wether it needs it or not and see how you go.

thanks for you reply blaze. i have just put new plugs in carried out compression test all cylinders are 145psi got good spark. the only lever i have is the throttle one where you can push the button and engage the throttle lever so its not in gear and the push in choke on the key. When i give it full throttle and engage the choke to start it still takes ages to start.

its a quiksilver throttle panel

cheers its great to be a member of this fine site

Easier starting on muffs can be a sign of a compression problem although yours is fine so it is gummed up carbs at some level somewhere - most probably, give them a though going over, sooner rather than later as more mercs blown up at some time after the symptoms your present than I have had hot breakfasts or ever will, they are a temperamental design in this area compared to some other engines.

So a full carbs rebuild then the obligatory link and sync and re- time if you decide and the good old girl will be blasting along until the next time it does it.

cheers fnq

hey mate.

try pushing the choke in and out while winding over. other wise sounds like the carbs might need to come off. good luck mate.
