Guys and Girls of Ausfish,

I fear bringing up a topicv that has been covered many many times before, BUT

when your butt is in the hot seat the decesion is a hard choice.

Problem, Allison Vision 195.......... 200hp 2str "97 Merc...............200 hp Merc Died

This is the old mans boat so as a good son I would like to give the oldman the best advice around.

We feel that the boat doesn't need a 200hp to get it along, so we are looking at a 175hp.
Problem is that the old man uses the boat every week end doing alot of estuary stuff, then I come along and take her outside.
Looking at engines on the week end he has come up with the Merc Opitmax 175hp.......
Although i think these are great engines, for the money wouldn't you just go to a 4str as
we understand that there is going to be a 'lag" if you like getting her outa the hole. But when you are spending that type of money the difference between a Optimax and a 4str is nothing.

So if I may draw on the vast knowledge on this site, I would like to know your option and why.......... or better still what questions do you ask yourself in our position to make a better decesion. What to look for what not to look for type thing.

Cheers Aj

Hi AJ . I have a 115 merc 4 st , very good on fuel but sluggish . Im led to beleave the optimax is also good on fuel , plenty of grunt & lighter . Mercury have gone for a supercharged 4 st to improve there holeshot, But there alot more expencive than 2st . Tuff choice !!!

Hey Brian,

I have seen alot of the Allisons with 135 and 150hp 2strokes on em.
This is where I am thinking that we should be able to get away with a
175hp Max. I mean the boat with the 200hp did 100k's thats too quick for a fishing boat. We have been looking at 175 optimax or 175 Suzi. just reading another thread re engines and they were looking at Honda's or the Yammy.

To be Honest I am lost and looking for what ever assistance I can receive to
make the best decesion possible.

Cheers Aj

The old 'should have been here last week' syndrome - last week there was a 200hp opti going cheap.
Sold quick too.

I am slowly filling that hpdi regardless of brand v e-tec v 4 stroke.
That 2 strokes are still 2 strokes, is this a common myth from talking to 4 stroke dealers.

Hi

I have an Allison Vision 195 with a 97 225 efi merc. On the trailer it weighs over the 2 tonnes.

I have often thought that if i replaced the motor I would look at one in the 150 to 175 range most probably 2 stroke.

The HPDI or the e tec would certainly get my attention and i also look the merc range.

This is me just thinking out loud.

Mike,

Definatly............ I think after a lot of looking around and talking on the
phone and then this arvo talking to a number of dealers, which I am about to head off and do. I think at this stage the 175suzi is currently on thop of the pack.

Geoff,

I hear you loud and clear, the fact of the matter for us is that I tow her with my holden v8 and we always pre plan taking her outa the water.
ours with half fuel and gear on went 1980kgs over the weigh bridge.

So from then on, we take any excess gear out and make sure she is near empty when towing her, Generanlly the boat only leaves the water 3-4 times a year. So the only time that I run into trouble is when I take her in the bay
and have to fill up fro petrol before going to the ramp. I have had use of mates 4wd in the past.

In fact the 175 4 stroke is heavier than the current 97 200hp efi that is on her. But I think it is a good move regardless. After taking into account the loss of oil tank and Dad cleaning alot of his bits and peices out of her, we should be ok

With a better fuel economy, You could probably drop 50l of fuel you carry and get the same distance.
Theres a weight saving
In the end we carry more fuel as a precaution
Bloody 2 strokes just suck it all up.

make sure you let us know what motor you choose and how it performs.

Raging Bull,

I will be so happy that if I go out tha I wonthave to carry the spare 60ltr's
that I normally do, Just in case. I have known too many people that have ran outa fuel. I say Idiots and I for one cant walk on water.

Will do Black Jack, Its a funny thing I am nervous and excited all at once.
The old man has stepped back and basically left the decesion to me.
What a fella............. Going to hate if things go cock eyed and it comes
back to bite me in the ar$e...............................

Peter, I sent you one back too

Cheers Aj
