Gday all, I have just bought a tinny and now need a motor,The Transom is straight ie doesnt dip down in the middle where the motor goes, its 54cm from the top of the transom to the bottom of the V, do I need a long or short shaft ? :-/

I would say a short shaft, But how heavy is the motor going to be.
I would rather the motor higher out of the water Eg power head, than almost sitting level with the water.
That could end up exspensive on the drift or with a following sea.

I'm going long shaft needed
short shafts are about 390-430 or so mm transom height

I'm with finga - anything less than a 20" shaft (510mm - approx) and your prop will cavitate. (spin fast - get nowhere)

I just put a new 50hp Johnno with a 20 inch shaft on my Quintrex - it has a transom height of 508mm - and she goes perfect! There is still room to drop the motor one more hole.
