The largest container ship in the world (Emma Maersk) operating at the largest port in the world (Rotterdam). 11 cranes going at the same time.....

Some information:

Length -- 397m (almost half a kilometer!)

Width -- 63m

Deadweight -- 123,200 tonnes

Engine -- 14 cylinder diesel, 110,000 BHP

Top speed -- 50kph

Estimated cost -- over US$145 million

Capacity -- 15,000 TEU (1 TEU = 1 x 20ft container)

Apparently the silicon paint covering the part of the hull below the
waterline lowers the drag in the water so much that the vessel saves approx 1.2 million
litres of fuel a year :o :o :o :o
The trawler guys in moreton Bay might not have escaped from this little fella ;)
Some pics to come

Cheers and beers
Scott

Hmmm single prop, looks like they were on a budget.

Here is some more trivia;

The world's busiest port is contested by several ports around the world, as there is as yet no standardised means of evaluating port performance and traffic. Most keenly fought over this for the past decade was between the Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Singapore, with both ports claiming the busiest port title. The former, however, based its measurement on cargo tonnage handled (total weight of goods loaded and discharged), while the latter ranks in terms of shipping tonnage handled (total volume of ships handled). Since 2005, the Port of Shanghai has exceeded both ports to take the title in terms of total cargo tonnage[citation needed].

The following ports have variously made claims (or had claims made for them):

Port of Shanghai, People's Republic of China
The world's busiest port by cargo tonnage for the first time in 2005.

Port of Singapore, Singapore
The world's busiest port by shipping tonnage since 1986, and was the world's busiest container port twice in 1998 and 2005. It also continued to be the world's busiest transshipment port and world's busiest bunkering port. It was the busiest by cargo tonnage until overtaken by Shanghai in 2005.

Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands
Was the world's busiest port by cargo tonnage for many years until it was first overtaken by Singapore, and then by Shanghai since the 1990s.

Port of Hong Kong, People's Republic of China
Hong Kong was the World's busiest container port from 1992 to 2005.

it would be rare to see twin screw merchant ships.
some ships this size don't have a gearbox, you start the engine in ahead to go forward, stop the engine, and then start in astern to go backwards. not sure about this one?

this baby has what is considered the largest reciprocating engine in the world, a slow speed 2 stroke burning HFO, 80-100rpm, stands about 5 stories high. that's big!

Wonder if the guy who propped that could answer a few Ausfish propping questions?

Anyone got an email address ;)

I wonder how they measure performance?

Barrels per quarter mile probably :o

Roughasguts

the ginger beers drag the world's largest shifters around the engineroom and flog 'em with hammers ;D ;D

with 13 crew, only 3-4 in the engineroom during the day, it'd get lonely and you'd need a walkie talkie to find each other :o

those pics with the prop half out of the water are when she's in light displacement condition, no bunkers, ballast, fresh water, stores, etc, they wouldn't get underway like that.
she's being handled by tugs, the smoke out of the stack is from the generators.
the pics with boxes on deck has her sitting much lower in the water, in loaded displacement condition.

Who called it a "boat" :o

Ships have boats, boats do not have ships.
You are permitted to call a submarine a boat though, then again, a submarine doesnt care what you call it because for a submarine there are only other submarines and targets ;)

Bloody hell imagine the horsepower of the starter motor to try and start that up. And what motor suports that starter motor.

Maybe once that big un is going you never turn it off.

It takes me half a second in my boat to get the gaff, you would need to call a cab on that baby!!

Got to do the explorative trip when I was a 16yo apprentice on a medium sized freighter that docked in Burnie in Tassie. It was an amazing trip, this engine had exposed rockers, each one about 6 foot long, pistons had lifting eyes permantly in the top. Overhead crane run the lenth of the engine.
If you ever get the oppurunity to check out a ship engine make sure you have a look.
cheers

Now you would think if the guy was going to throw that much money at a boat (and he is obviously compensating for something) that he would have had them install winches on the side to help pull up the crab pots?

Yeah thanks for the invite out on your boat, I'll come along but I am not throwing in for fuel, and we have to take turns pulling up the pots.

Not as big, but if you ever get the chance to explore the tug "Forceful" down at south-bank take it. Interesting to watch half a dozen guys manually oiling the whole engine as it runs.
