DO!! at least give RACQ a #try before buying insurance elsewhere..

Club Marine are the market leader but get quotes from them and Suncorp, RACQ and NRMA QLD (they are keen).

Ask around about the claims experience as this is what matters.

Above all get a copy of the PDS (Product Disclosure Statement) from each from each companies internet site and check if the cover is what you want, there are differences.

Hints
- look at exclusions and any statement that starts with 'however'
- Cheap premiums can mean a cheap experience but not always
- Check excess's
- Agreed or Market value? Market value will only pay you what the market value is at the time of a claim.
- Know the value of your boat, motor, trailer and accessories and make sure they are covered adequately.

Do your homework and shop around then you should be fine.

Hope this helps

dropshot, my old man was in mission beach when the cyclone hit this year. He said RACQ was probably the worst with claims, same as on the gold coast with the flooding (june/july 2005 or 2004?). Will askhim tomorrow who was good. The guys he is with have them in a unit on the beach until their house is fixed. Have been there for about 6 weeks and won't be back home for another 4 or so.

Currently my boat is insured weith RACQ - good price, but they are fairly new in marine insurance, so perhaps not well tested when it comes to claims management etc. If you are a member of a boat/ fishng club, sometimes groups like Suncorp will offer discounts.

CGU were the first on site up north after the cyclone, very active in sorting things out. They are chasing structural reports for houses, not requiring the home owners to do it.

Suncorp (who my father is with) were a little slower getting organised. However, when they got organised it has been very easy.

I know I'm not talking about boats, but you would think that if a company is good on those types of claims they should carry it onto other forms of insurance.

hey drop, we use racq for everything (house/contents/cars/boat) as they are very competitive. have only had to make 1 claim off them in 15 years (for the car) and they were unreal. now for the catch, for boat insurance they only insure for market value or listed value "WHICHEVER IS LOWER" so if you have paid top dollar for a second hand boat that's maybe in better conditionthan average then maybe you'll only get the current market value and not what you have listed as your value. i queried this only last week when my policy was due and i noticed that the premium had dropped but they didn't list a market value on the policy document (like they do for cars). i wondered what this value was and when i rang them they basically told me that in the event of total loss they simply go around the boat yards in your local area and then work out a replacement value based on whats available in your area. we stuck with them because the premiums are certainly the right price and we think that the market value for our boat will be higher than what we paid for it. food for thought anyway dropshot ;D

Hi All

A pal told me QBE were worth looking at / going to as their premiums were lower, the excesses were lower and they are supposed to pay on agreed value in reasonable time.

I'm with Club Marine at present (Never had a claim) but I'm told their premiums are higher as are their excesses and get this, they are underwrritten by QBE :D

So what to do?

Cheers

You took the words right out of my mouth Chimo...based on all the above I changed to QBE...definite agreed value which I could not get with Club.

Agreed value is the secret to reduced heart ache particularly with finance involved also have a damn good look at how they treat fittings and contents. Ask yourself how much fishing gear could you replace for $500.00.

I made a claim with Club Marine for gear box damage due to a prop strike; they were excellent. Didn't argue the toss at all. John

RACQ, use to be with suncorp until they wanted me to take my rig to some accessor to be valued. Cheap too.

Suggest you also take a look at Nautilus. This co was set up by ex Club Marine dudes & is cheaper. Also agreed and separate value for boat motor & trailer. Other insurers that only give you agreed value for the whole set up can use their discretion on what they pay you, if for example your trailer is stolen.

Hi guys

Suncorp (in Brisbane), Had a fire on board, they couldn't have been more helpful, really looked after me. You only really know how good they are after you make a claim, and Suncorp are very highly rated from my perspective

Hmmm. Quite coincidentally, my insurance with RACQ is due for renewal when along comes a brochure from Nautilus. It may have come with the rego papers - cannot recall - but if so that would explain the exquisite timing.

Anyway, their brochure said "Unbelievable Insurance Offer We will beat your current boat insurance premium by a minimum of 10%"

So I emailed for a quote yesterday and they very promptly gave me a quote of $400 for a sum insured of $24 000 on my little Quinnie runabout. This compares quite unfavorably with my RACQ renewal of $284.30.

I know that the last time that I checked quotes, RACQ was the cheapest then also.
