Brett,
I have a yamaha 15 on my tinny and have had it now for 3 years and no problems so far, starts easily, relatively quiet etc. But I think these are more like $2500.

I have also had a very old Tohatsu, my dad still has it, 9.8 and it is bulletproof, he doesn't use it for a year or so and then it will start 3rd pull. The only problems with the old tohatsu's was the corrosion, but I think they have fixed this now.

When I was buying my new motor I was deciding between the suzuki (also very good motor) and the yammie. I went the yammie due to the ease of use, eg. gear lever on front of motor, simple tilt mechanism. May be something to consider.

i've got a suzuki 15...good motor, plenty of power- planes my tinny with 6 people on, and still gets good speed. I've gone on some mates tinnys with mercs and they are great- really quiet and smooth. The suzuki was $1995, brand new with 25 litre tank, and i think the mercs are about $2450.

dude you pick the mercs up for under 2 grand and if you look into it they put out whats called a 15 hp super which is made in japan not in the USA and is a tad bigger engine still 15hp but put out more torque. look up they'er web site. 8-)

G'day
These days you cannot go wrong with the engines. Look for one with features that suit yourself.

I have a 9.9 merc and prefer that because I have eveything on the tiller handle, just where I like it.

Clone Trooper- I think you may find that the merc 15 super is actually a tohatsu 18hp. Similar story to the merc 40 and the 40 lightning, also a tohatsu engine.

Yank merc , light simple to use everything on the tiller, twin cylinder and trolls for ages with the idle turned down.
15 jap merc is tohatsu.
