Looking at buying a new VHF and am interested in what peoples experiences have been like with say Navman, Uniden, GME and icom and which brand and model they think is the best. In addition what antenna did you use.

Cheers

I bought a brand new Icom from E-bay in the USA. It arrived within 14 days of paying for it thru Pay-pal. I think it's a model 304? I saved over $130.00 AUD by getting from the USA including postage. It has all the whistles and bells thay you could want and is guaranteed to withstand imersion to 1 meter for 30 minutes. I had a GME before I bought the Icom. What a waste of money the GME was :'( . I am more than satisfied with the Icom, I think they are realy fabulous :D
I would buy another Icom without hesitation if I needed one. I believe that Icom is the brand that the military use.

G'Day EC.

Got an ICOM VHF, 22 years ago cost $1200.

Never missed a beat, still looks almost like new.

Its the only thing I keep when I sell the boat, to fit it to the next one.

Wouldn't mind upgrading to a unit with DSC... na.... :)

Had a bit to do with radio's a few years back where I worked at the time. I used to think that standard horizon made radio's easily on a par with icom but at a much better price. Just a thought.

Whilst on VHFs, which current models have programmable/tagable scan? I want to tag more than 3 channels at one time and every now and again I wouldn't mind doing a full scan. Most of the blurbs for the models at the moment spend half the time talking about DSC then they promote bichannel or trichannel watch as some sort of great feature.

Have used the icom VHF's before and they were easy to use as well as being very capable units.

DSC DSC DSC.......used as a marketing tool for VHF sets, and isnt even compulsory or used here for recreational vessels. May be in the future it will be, but i have a Uniden MC535 without DSC,works as good as any other VHF on the market, and cost me half the price.
