Looks suspiciously like a carp - the scurge of our waterways downunder.

Another nice fish. See if you can track down the scientific name as it will let us know what family of fish it is from.

I believe they are carp that you are catching. My friend donated a photo of his trophy jungle perch at 46 cm to show the difference. The photo quality is shit thanks to my scanner but you can see the difference.
Tim
ps i will post a photo of my big one when i get it, hopefully better quality.

Hi Tim
Thanks for your information, I just found this information for this fish;
Common Name - Hampala Barb
Local Name - Pla Kasoop Kit
Scientific Name - Hampala macrolepida
Family - Cyprinidae
I hope above information is correct.

The Cyprinidea family (to which the Australian Common Carp belongs) has about 1500 members. Guess it is difficult to find a common name for all of them, so if Jungle Perch wasn't already taken in Thailand, guess the one shown is called a Jungle Perch in Thailand and is not the same as we know JP in Aus.

Common Carp
Cyprinus Carpio
Other Names: European Carp, Asian Carp, Chinese Carp, German Carp, Edible Carp, Great Carp, Mirror carp

Apparently for over 100years two other strains of carp lived in NSW without upsetting anyone, and then in 1960 the trouble maker detailed above was imported from Germany to Victoria as a food fish (typical mexican idea if you ask me ;D) and then escaped and has infested South Eastern Aus.

Note that the one Mr Ocean is holding has a longer more forked tail than the picture of the Aussie carp I am looking at, so is probably just a different part strain of carp.

Jungle Perch (in australia)
Kuhlia rupertris
Other Names: Mountain Trout, Buffalo Bream

Hope all that is of interest. :)
