Just to let anyone who is interested know, we have been out to Lake Keepit (between Tamworth and Gunnedah NSW) every weekend for the past three weeks and the yellowbelly and cod have been particularly active.

We don't claim to be the best freshwater fishermen around and our results are usually pretty random, but even we have been doing consistently well lately.

Yellowbelly are plentiful both on trolled crankbaits and live bait. Cod are a bit harder to come by but are certainly around. We spoke to a fellow yesterday who picked up three good sized ones in an hour last week, all on dark coloured Oar-Gee lures just before dark.

We have been catching yellowbelly up to about 2lb on trolled Poltergeists, Boomerangs, Wee Pees and other similar cranks. Successfull colors have been bright green or pink and metallics during sunny periods and the darker black or black/metallic combos when overcast or at dusk.

Our best catch over the last few weeks was yesterday when we caught 8 legal size yellow belly (larget 1.1Kg live) between two of us in about an hour and a half. These were all cught under the one submerged tree and all on the humble earthworm.

If you're in the area you probably know about this, but if you're a little way away and are looking for somewhere to go where the fish are on, give Keepit a throw. Better be quick though as the river below is getting fairly low, so they will probably let some water out soon and the dam is already pretty low. This can change the whole ball game overnight. Also, a cold snap cannot be far away and this could have a similar effect.
