I think it was named after Captain Bishop.

Who was he? Got no idea.

Probably after the old Bishop Island that got swallowed up with the extension of Fisherman Islands Port.

Used to be a pub cabins and all out there, was a popular spot years ago.

Heres some directions i found on google

HOW TO GET TO THERE.
Head for Fisherman Islands that is about 25km east of the city. From the
city: cross Story Bridge, turn east onto Shaftston Avenue, Lytton Road -
Wynnum Road - Balmoral Street - Wynnum Road - then turn left into
Junction Road at traffic lights - road follows into Lytton Road - runs
into Pritchard Street - then straight onto Port Drive. The boat ramp is
signposted on the right and is opposite Howard Smith Drive just before
crossing Captain Bishop Bridge.

Marlin_Mike, I think you have answered a question that has been bugging me for ages. Years ago when in high school we did a day trip to an island near the mouth of the Brisbane River for a school excursion. The name of that island you had just reminded me was Bishop Island.

Only recently I was trying to think of the name of this island and tried maps, etc yet for the life of me I couldn't remember, obviously because the island has disappeared.

Anyway thanks for ending my battle to remember the name of Bishop Island.

Regards Cameron.

From memory I recall reading that Bishop was the captain of the
dredge that used to operate the lower reaches and the mouth
of Brisbane river.

The dredge was sunk, along with several other vessels to
form Bishop Island, (totally manmade) and was reclaimed
and filled to form part of the new port extension.

When driving out to Whyte Is ramp, you actually have to
drive past the entry (on the right) to the ramp, cross the bridge,
then either do an illegal u turn, or go up to the roundabout,
and come back and turn left in to the carpark of the ramp.
I don't know if this has changed, but that was how it used to be.

Harry.

They actually made it harder to get to the ramp when they re-did the motorway a year or so ago, that illegal U Turn is now almost impossible and you put youru life in your hands doing now as the semi's burn along there at 80+ !!

EEK :o
