it seems you have your eye on one . here's a few tips before you buy
1. how many saterlites does it pick up more the better
2. does it have a battery saver mode so you don't chew batters
3.is it easy to use
4. does it have a cigertte lighter plug so you can run it off the car or boat
5. can you plug it into the home computer to down load waypoints
6. can it be mounted on the boat

now for the basics
a waypoint is a spot ( fishing ) on the water that you want to go back to
I use mine for marking the beacons out from the main waterways i use so i can find them in the dark or if the weather closes in
a route is just a number of waypoints to follow like a channel ( so you don't hit sandbanks )
this is a start hope this helps

WamJam,

I have been using a Garmin emap unit for the last year.

The reason that I bought it over any others is as follows.

1 Users memory card to store uploaded maps (not restricted to the amount of onboard memory in other units)
2 Very good performance for the size of unit, always been able to lock onto SATS within 15-30 seconds
3 Backlight and battery saver on board.
4 Waypoint tracking so you can find you way back using a crumb trail etc.
5 Easy to download updates/maps/waypoints from PC (make sure you get the Serial connector.

Check out this site in the USA it has loads of good things re GPS systems

Good Luck
