??? Can anyone put me onto any good publications, videos etc. that clearly & simply explain how to correctly read a standard sounder please?

Having trawled a number of sounder manufacturer's web sites, it seems that such text isn't available.

The paperwork that came with my new sounder would seem to suggest that manufacturers are more concerned with filling the paper with basic operating instructions in as many languages as possible. ;D

I'm particularly wanting to get a handle on understanding & identifying the make-up of the bottom (floor).

I really don't want to have to take my snorkle & goggles and be diving to the bottom to understand what the sounder is showing me! ;D

Any advice would be most welcomed thanks.

Cheers,

Gigantor

I found a Book about 12 months ago at Angus & Robertson
Bookstores
Lowrance book of Sonar and GPS by Ron Calcutt.
It gives a good descriptions of what is showing on the screens etc.
Was a Bargain for $10.00
Hope that helps

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Much appreciated indeed.

Found the Lowrance link very useful and a good starting point. Can't understand why ALL manufacturers don't have a similar section on their web sites, or better info with the purchased product.

BTW, I remember meeting a young fella in Bundy in 2001 that worked in one of the local tackle stores there that was looking to develop a video in conjunction with Garmin. He made the comment back then that virtually no sounder suppliers provided any info on how to interpret a sounder. So he was going to develop a short video explaining what you see on the screen (covering deep reef, estuary and lakes), which would be supplied free with each Garmin sounder purchased. Sadly I haven't seen such a video on any of Garmin's products. So the deal must have fallen over. I think this is still a good idea. Just need to entice an experienced fisho to get their handycam out and do something similar. I'm sure this type of product could be put out in Video, CD-ROM and DVD via a web site for profit.
