My latest brain-surge is to enter all my fishing spots on the Google Earth map on my computer.

I've run into a small problem though. My GPS reads to thousanths of a degree (I think) - for instance a Southing would be expressed as 16'39.491. Google Earth has a different format though, eg 16'39'20.79

(those numbers are just for example, not necessarily the same point)

Does anyone know how to convert the numbers from one to the other?

cheers,

steve

Your format is 1/1000 of second.

Google is second & 1/100 of second.

so if you have a .387 on the end of your coordinate this = 0.387 * 60 = 23.22 (Google Format)

or you could change the format in your GPS unit and forget about the maths.

Steve,

You can also enter this format into GE as a search - the format for the search is:

153 16.5E, 27 17.25S

All the permitted co-ordinate formats are listed here:
http://www.keyhole.com/GoogleEarthHelp/GoogleEarth.htm#Places/Repositioning_Placemarks.htm#AdvancedCoordinates

I'm trying to do something very similar...
but I can't seem to figure out how to calculate the coordinates #:-/

Lets say I have coordinates of:
29.30.99S 150.10.151E
How does that map back to Google earth coordinates?

*confused*

[edit]

hmm... after a little more thought *sigh* I think I might have the anser.
If someone could confirm, that would be peachy.

29.30.99S 150.10.151E
Would convert to:
29 30 5.94S 150 10 9.06E

Is this correct?

Mate, there's a half-decent converter located here - http://jeeep.com/details/coord/

Your conversion looks ok, except the 5.94S is actually 59.4

Most of our GPS units display in degrees and minutes (with decimals of minutes)...

So for the above example 29.30.99S is 29 degrees, 30.99 minutes south latitude
and 150.10.151E #is 150 degrees, 10.151 minutes east longitude

To convert to degrees, minutes, and seconds (with decimal seconds) simply multiply the fractional part of the minutes by sixty and call them seconds.

So 29 degrees 30.99 minutes is 29 degrees plus 30 minutes plus 0.99 x 60 seconds giving 29 degrees, 30 minutes, 59.4 seconds (sometimes shown as 29° 30' 59.4") as stated by 25_ponies. #Either add the S for south or use a minus sign in front.

The longitude equates to 150° 10' 9.06" E as volcano said.

Hi

Is there some way to import all your marks from a spreadsheet or similar file into Google Earth (free version)?

PS Latest version has much better undersea resolution.

Whichway,

you can import GPS marks, tracks and plots from a CSV file, but not with the free version. You need at least Plus for this feature.
