Hey, i've been in townsville for only a bit more than a year, I'm a newbie here and am 21 yo. Ive never done any fishing in townsville as yet, The misses and i just bought a 4.2 metre, mariner powered dinghy, I want to do some fishing around townsville but i have no idea where to start, If anyone can give me a hand with locating some good spots and best routes to get there. Also i dont know anyone in townsville so i have noone to fish with so anyone interested just give me a yell and hopefully we can get the boat out a bit more often. Ive fished barrattas only because i have access to a hut down there, but i dont like having to make a weekend of it all the time, id rather just go out from townsville once in a while for a day or night trip. Either reply here or email me at VL_turbo_2ltr@austarnet.com.au

I think you will find the fishos of Townsville a little more low key than southern fishos and spend more time reading these boards than actually posting.

Call into ProTackle on Ross river Road. They have mud maps on local fishing spots. Most of the tackle stores will tell you where to go.

Like this weekend we are not sure if we will go chase Spanish Mackerel, fish the shoals for some Reds, chase barra in the creeks or head up to Hinchinbrook for the day, tough decision.

Tim I was lucky enough to spend afew years in Townsville and envy you for whats on your doorstep.Jump in at the Bohle head out the mouth towards North Point Maggy Is,line up the point at Pallaranda with the Casino(its a sure bet) then head north maintaining point to Casino. At 15 to 20k for approx 10min glancing over your left shoulder two water towers will appear from behind a ridge in the Hinterland, confirm previous points drop ancher. There is a mountain directly under you(dont worry its not active). A large preportion of whats running through Townsville will grab a feed from here on there way ,and I mean grab,be prepared lives or pily's top and bottem. If you see Gary in his Dory wearing Transfeild overalls tell him to keep the bloody noise down.....from Craig

, i had no idea there was boat ramp at the bohle, .
Tim

Do yourself a favour & try not to go in or out under about 1.2m tide. She's pretty muddy at the bottom & the creek out to the river gets shallow.

If your not set up or inclined for luring, then live bait is the go for the better northern estuary fishy's ;D.

Sometimes hard to get at the bohle. try the shallow muddy banks on the inside of the bends at low tide for prawns, or mullet. try the little gutters draining off the mud flats as well.

Close to town, the ross river, (entry via sth townsville national park ramp) can be OK.

Live bait can be found on your way out to the mouth, on the right hand side bank & small creek behind where the boats are all moored.
Yabbie beds are out the sand bars, on the right hand side of the mouth. best pumping at under about 2m tide.

If the winds not too bad, anchoring up near the rock wall on the left side of the mouth can be ok. You can have a line or 2 in against the rocks, and/or out in the deeper water of the channel.

I have found that the number of crabs in the bohle is decreasing alot, has anyone else noticed that it is really hard to find a feed of crabs in the bohle

Bad luck on the gearbox Tim. Try Pallaranda ramp, shouldn't be a problem with your 4.2,easy going around to the Bohle from there to.

pallaranda ramp? hmm never new there was one, how do i get to it?

I'm going over to maggie saturday morning. You know any good spots on the mainland side of maggie or southern side? I only stay in these spots because im a newbie to boats and still paranoid about being caught in some bad whether. So closer the better for me.

I have been, ive been up as far as i can go, to the national park. i dont remember seeing a ramp, what is it near.

The ramp is opposite the shops before the national park.

No good if it is blowing. It is straight onto the beach; apparently the sand is hard enough to drive on.

I used is once years ago. Pain in the bum, easier to use town ramp and motor across unless you are only going to fish the old quarantine station for a couple of hours on high tide.

Just as you get to the shops, look over to your right . A big car park & ramp off the beach.

OK at high tide, very shallow beach launching at 1/2 tide down. Watch it late in the arvo as the SE's blow in, it can be a real bitch as it's unprotected.

As for maggie, try out from picnic bay & just around the corner towards west point, plenty of bombies & structure around there, or middle reef.(that's about the "middle" between the mainland & the island #;D)

Grab yourself a chart of the area #8). There's a map shop in sth townsville, palmer st just up from the cafe on the corner. or Ships bell in nth ward, or some tacklo's may have one.

Also There was a good map for the general area for landbased & close in fishing bought out by Sunmap, showed creeks & beach access, ramps etc. The tacklo's again should have them, if not Sunmap office is in Garbutt, I can't remember just where, check the phone book. # #

Hey thanks alot for that fellers. I'll go look at the maps today, i dont have gps or anything though, how will i go finding the spots just by scale? I have a depth sounder though which may make it easyer to find some drop offs, but i only brought it last week and havnt yet tested it to see if it works.
I know wher that boat ramp is now, i can imagine it being a bit hard to launch in windy conditions. How far from there is it to the bohle mouth?
And striker, you mentioned a place just north of there, where you can see the water towers, i may give it a go next weekend.
Cheers

If you head over the bohle from paleranda go wide, it is shallow on the point.

Back in the old bays theys would swim the Cattle from Palleranda to West Point on the big low tides

Tim, As the mackeral are running troll the bay leading up to West Pt,a spoon will do.Last time I hooked a schooly then a spaniard took the schooly to the gills. Before searching for the towers (must be a clear day)try more sheltered waters between Maggy and The Strand. The two main beacons protecting you from the shallow shoals of Maggy, line them up trolling once again with the likes of a spoon .Be carefull I'd rather handle a 6 foot bronzy than some Spaniards. [smiley=smash.gif] Hopefully you'l see what I mean[smiley=smash.gif]
cheers Craig. ;D ;D

Tim, if you have a drag net/cast net, don't ignore the shallows off pallarenda, great place to gather your bait
-> garfish++
Just wear some sneakers or something and shuffle your feet a bit I wouldn't want to surprise a ray though!

Tim,

You might try Cattle Creek which is not far out of TVL. Great fishing and you'll normally have the place to yourself.

Cheers
