;D Hate to tell u this roman but apparantly they still do..if u go to the raptis seafood page there is a pic of some guys holding the carcass of some at the auction with a caption.."Large Variety of Fish"..i thought they stopped it years ago because of the mercury content in them. Hey they are quite good eating when they are small...

Jeeez, this post got dug out of the archives! ::) :o

Mate, I get 'em in Moreton Bay and used to target 'em specifically too. The 10 footer my little feller refers too was caught near Amity bank on a tandem 10/0 gamakatsu to 50lb line 24kg penn mariner rodd and penn 245ld reel........baited with a whole large squid. It took over 2 hrs to get boatside (couldn't get the anchor up to chase) and was released.

Got some pics of smaller specimens

Meant to mention that sand crab are the favoured bait with squid second.

Mate, those spotted shovellies are something else when it comes to wriggling..........been skinned a few times. The quickest way to calm 'em (same with rays) is to stick your finger in the gill plate....yes, it looks like the eye, but it ain't. I don't do it unless I am keeping 'em for the pot.........the deckie's pot that is ;D

Used to target these vermin in my teenage years. These things pull like freight trains when hooked. Best baits I found were whole legal live whiting. This fella towed us out of a creek in into the ocean a little. Was a little concerned cause it was right on dark. Was released short time later.

This is probably the biggest we've caught to date. Went round 10ft. Lost some skin off the hands handlining this one. Was released shortly after.
