New marine parks mooted for Kimberley coast

The Western Australian Government is foreshadowing new marine parks off the Kimberley coast, with 15 areas being considered.

A State Government working group identified the sites as being in need of protection in 1995.

The Fisheries Department will begin consultation in the new year, canvassing community views on the value of the waters for their tourism and fishing significance.

WA Fisheries Minister Jon Ford says he expects a report back in October next year.

"Some of them are very small and some of them are great, large areas of water like the Buccaneer archipelago, so that whole area for instance is a candidate area, and of course that has a lot of interest to the Bardi area and big interest to the Kimberley people in general," he said.
