Futile to fight declaration

The Narooma Port Committee acknowledges the proposed establishment of the Batemans Marine Park. To expend energy trying to fight its declaration is futile. Our effort now is to ensure the best outcome in the "zoning" within the park.

The majority is likely to be general use, with little or no change to the present situation, but in the Cape Byron Marine Park all forms of setline/ dropline and purse seine net fishing is disallowed.

The areas that will drastically affect us are sanctuary zones; no fishing of any description, nor even anchoring of your boat (for snorkelling or diving - note this well). Habitat protection zones allow line fishing. We suspect all forms of trawling; setline fishing and trap fishing will be banned. Special purpose zones will cover areas such as oyster leases in Wagonga inlet. We believe that these zones are not yet decided, and the purpose of the Marine Park Advisory Committee is to provide our input into what we believe these zones should be. However there is "gossip" around town that it is a foregone conclusion, the Government and the Green lobby have already stitched up a deal.
